Robert Downey Jr Got Ripped as Tony Stark in Iron Man 2!

Although it wasn't his first movie, my first memories of Robert Downey Jr was in the 1985 movie "Weird Science". Back then, this movie became a cult-classic with a lot of teens. Ironically he played a drug addicted rich kid in Less Than Zero, shortly after. This movie role became his reality and ten years later Downey was a wreck. From 1996 to 2001 he was arrested several times on drug-related charges.

In 2008, Iron Man Came Out. This Was a Turning Point for Robert Downey Jr

The part required that Downey ad 20 pounds of muscle in 5 months. The director, Jon Favre, wanted Downey to have the physique to look like "he had the power to forge iron". So in a short period of time he had to accomplish quite a bit. Luckily legendary American trainer Brad Bose was hired to whip him into shape. I would say that the first Iron Man movie was Robert Downey Jr's first step toward his now amazing physique.

The Official Iron Man 2 Trailer

Robert Downey Jr looks better than ever in this role. The guy is lean, which creates those angular male model features. You can tell just by looking at a man's face at roughly what his body composition is. Downey looks like a GQ model. Pretty darn impressive for a 45 year-old.

In the First Iron Man, Downey Added 20 Pounds of Muscle to His Physique

Robert Downey Jr in the First IronmanThe main piece of equipment that Brad Bose had Downey use was a machine called "The Vortex". The Vortex is a machine that has various cables, pull up bar, dip bar, etc. The unique feature of this machine is that it can hit the muscle from almost any angle. It is also possible to quickly switch from one exercise to the next.

Another machine extensively used was "The Jacobs Ladder". This is a cardio machine that is basically a revolving ladder that you climb. So he used The Vortex to gain muscle while the Jacob's Ladder helped him lose body fat. He also used a device called "The Pineapple" which is a vibration platform designed to exhaust the muscles when exercising.

He added the base muscle and got to a decently low body fat level, but this was just the beginning...

In Sherlock Holmes Robert Downey Jr "Fine Tunes" His Iron Man Physique

Robert Downey Junior Fight Scene Sherlock HolmesAlthough Downey looked great in Iron Man, he was new to this level of fitness. It takes a number of months at a low body fat level to really create a ripped detailed physique. Simply continuing what he did to get lean for Iron Man, Robert Downey Jr sharpened up to a new level. You see once someone leans down a bit, like Robert did in Iron Man, it takes a while for their skin to shrink down to their smaller size. If you watch the fight scenes in Sherlock Holmes, you will notice he looks more toned than Iron Man.

In Iron Man 2, Downey Jr Has Reach a High Level of Conditioning

Ironman 2 Robert Downey Jr as Tony StarkYou will notice that his face, skin, and overall physique just look a little better. One of the big benefits of staying lean and holding that condition over a number of years is that the skin finally has time to adapt to the new body size. People also underestimate how sharp and angular their face will look when getting down to a lower body fat level. Robert Downey Jr has the look of a "GQ" model in Iron Man 2 and this is largely because he has stayed lean.

The Iron Man 2 Look Was Really a Result of 3 Years

Although this article was about Robert Downey Jr's Workout for Iron Man 2, his journey began in 2007. His training began before filming of the first Iron Man movie and he continued and improved over a period of 3 years. He worked with Brad Bose on The Vortex, Jacob's Ladder, and The Pineapple to get the sleek and lean look you see today. Obviously diet played a large role as well.
