His Work Opened My Mind & Helped Me To Grow Up
The novels of Robert A Heinlein have had more influence on me than anything else in regard to my personal development and how I interact with society at large. He taught me to believe in the innate goodness of people while being wary of their potential for violence at the same time. I've also learned more about love in all of its myriad forms from the characters in his books than from any other source.
Robert A Heinlein at a Glance
Robert Anson Heinlein (July 7, 1907 ? May 8, 1988) was an American novelist and science fiction writer. Often called "the dean of science fiction writers",WonderCon 2008 :: Robert A. Heinlein Memorial Blood Drive he is one of the most popular, influential, and controversial authors of "hard science fiction". He set a high standard for science and engineering plausibility and helped to raise the genre's standards of literary quality. He was the first writer to break into mainstream, general magazines such as The Saturday Evening Post, in the late 1940s, with unvarnished science fiction. He was among the first authors of bestselling, novel-length science fiction in the modern, mass-market era. For many years, Heinlein, Isaac Asimov, and Arthur C. Clarke were known as the "Big Three" of science fiction.Robert J. Sawyer. The Death of Science FictionSir Arthur Clarke Named Recipient of 2004 Heinlein Award. Heinlein Society Press Release. Heinlein was a remarkable writer of science-fiction short stories, and he was one of a group of writers who were groomed in their writing by John W. Campbell, Jr. the editor of Astounding magazine - along with the likes of Isaac Asimov.
Within the framework of his science fiction stories Heinlein repeatedly integrated recognizable social themes: The importance of individual liberty and self-reliance, the obligation individuals owe to their societies, the influence of organized religion on culture and government, and the tendency of society to repress non-conformist thought. He also examined the relationship between physical and emotional love, explored various unorthodox family structures, and speculated on the influence of space travel on human cultural practices. His iconoclastic approach to these themes led to wildly divergent perceptions of his works and attempts to place mutually contradictory labels on his work. For example, his 1959 novel Starship Troopers was regarded by some as advocating militarism and to some ex...
What Would RAH Do?
Three reasons Robert A Heinlein is my Favorite Author
The words of my favorite RAH character say it better than I
Lazarus Long is probably Heinlein's most well known character. The following quotes are from a fictional notebook of his that I first encountered in Time Enough For Love. I use quotes from this "notebook" frequently to express my outlook and attitudes."The more you love, the more you can love--and the more intensely you love. Not is there any limit on how many you can love. If a person had time enough, he could love all of that majority who are decent and just."
"If you are part of a society that votes, then do so. There may be no candidates and no measures you want to vote for... but there are certain to be ones you want to vote against. By this rule you will rarely go wrong.
If this is too blind for your taste, consult some well-meaning fool (there is always one around) and ask his advice. Then vote the other way. This enables you to be a good citizen (if such is your wish) without spending the enormous amount of time on it that truly intelligent exercise of franchise requires."
"Sin lies only in hurting other people unnecessarily. All other 'sins' are invented nonsense. (Hurting yourself is not sinful -- just stupid.)"

I am looking for a missing story. One of Heinlein's stories was published in the 50's in paperback. It was not a full novel, only about 3/16 inch thick. I believe it was published later in a collection, but I haven't been able to find it. The original title of the story (and the little book) was "Universe" about trapped crew members and mutants in a space ship traveling to a distant star but completely unaware of it. It was their universe and all they knew until one day they found out. Does anyone know where I can find this story? jbelotte@mac.com
