Robert Palmer's music is an ecclectic mix of rock, blues, jazz, soul, reggae, and other distinctive styles, highlighted by some of the coolest music videos of the 80's. The man simply had killer taste in music and a great sense of style.

Palmer spent his last fifteen years in Lugano, Switzerland, and died of a heart attack in Paris, France in 2003 at the age of 54. He was so cool his heart couldn't take it anymore.

This lens looks back at this soulful singer's hits, including Addicted to Love, Simply Irresistible, Bad Case of Loving You, and Some Like it Hot.

From his 1985 album Riptide, the number 1 single "Addicted to Love" also launched one of the most memorable music videos of all time. Directed by Terence Donovan, the identical glamour girls were made-up to look like mannequins that had come to life.

After Duran Duran went on hiatus, their guitarist Andy Taylor and bassist John Taylor joined Robert Palmer and drummer Tony Thompson to form the band Power Station. Their eponymous 1985 album spawned two hit singles with "Some Like It Hot" and a cover of the T. Rex song "Get It On". Palmer performed live with the band only once that year, on Saturday Night Live, before the band toured with singer Michael Des Barres. Palmer was already back in the studio working on what would be a hit solo album, "Riptide".

Palmer recorded the album Riptide in 1985, with Power Station bandmates Thompson and Andy Taylor playing on some tracks. Bernard Edwards produced both the Power Station and Riptide albums.

Riptide featured the Number 1 single "Addicted to Love", which introduced the glamorous all-girl back-up band, and who were next featured in the video for this cover of The Cherrelle's "I Didn't Mean to Turn You On".
