Wall-e, Robosapien and More Robot Toys Your Kids Will Love

Robot toys are hot, thanks to the success of movies such as Disney's Wall-e and to innovative products such as Wow-Wee Robosapien and others. Here are some of the top RC robots and related products.

R/C U Command Wall-E

A remote control Wall-e

The Wall-e DVD was released in November, just in time to fan the flames of one of the summer's hot movies and ensure that these little robots should be one of the hottest toys of the Christmas season.

U Command Wall-E

Amazon Price: $59.99 (as of 07/12/2009)Buy Now

This is sure to be on many children's wish lists for Christmas or birthdays this year. This cute little remote control Wall-e robot comes with changing facial expressions, moving arms, eyes that light up and original movie voice and sound effects. The programmable remote allows you to make the little movie star move forward, reverse, turn, dance or perform about 1000 action combos. To create this magic, however, you'll need 7 (count 'em SEVEN) AA batteries.

WowWee Robosapien V2

The new, cooler version of the original remote-controlled robot

WowWee Robosapien V2 Full Function Humanoid Robot with Remote Control

Amazon Price: $299.98 (as of 07/12/2009)Buy Now

The original Robosapien was an immediate hit with kids and adults who loved making the remote control robot dance, walk, pick up objects and move around. But V2 is even cooler - and more human. This guy's now got four different walking gaits, the ability to turn his head like us mere mortals, and a fondness for bowling. He also comes with infrared vision and touch sensors to avoid objects, and hearing sensors to help him detect people in his proximity. He will even interact with people and other WowWee robots like Roboraptor or Robopet. They just don't make robots any cooler than this, which is why these continue to be favorities for all ages.

Who knew robots enjoyed bowling??

Here's an example of some things the RoboSapien V2 robot can do.

More WowWee Robotic Toys

After the success of the original Robosapien, WowWee created a variety of new robots, including the V2 shown above and the variations of Robosapien shown below. The prices on these have come down considerably since they were originally introduced, and they remain much cheaper than the V2 version above.

WowWee Spiderman Robosapien

The original Robosapien is still a cool toy for kids, as he can walk, talk, move his arms, dance, and many other actions controlled by the programmable remote.

A Robotic Dog

Tekno the Robotic Puppy

He's not your average family pet, but this puppy won't require any trips to the vet or a large supply of Dog Chow. He can, however, wag his tail when he's happy, bark on command and go chew on his bone when you want him to behave.

Tekno the Robotic Puppy - Black

Amazon Price: $299.97 (as of 07/12/2009)Buy Now

Amazon says: Improved walking animation gives Tekno smooth, realistic movement and magnetic sensors allow him to perform advanced actions. For instance, Tekno loves to be scratched behind the ears or patted on the head. He reacts to sound, sight, and touch, and obeys several radio-controlled commands. Behaviors are launched by pressing the sensors on his head, neck, nose, and side. Children can't resist his floppy ears, wagging tail, and light-up puppy dog eyes. And should you decide Tekno needs an animal companion, he interacts with other robotic puppies.

More Robotic Pets

In case you're allergic to robotic dogs or would simply prefer a pet of another type, you can also get Tekno the cat and Tekno the pony. Like Tekno the Puppy, these robotic creatures walk and move their heads and tails, and each one has a few unique features to make them fun for the kids (and adults!).

Tekno the Robotic Kitty

Tekno Kitty purrs when you pet her and even comes with her own robotic toys - a fish and a mouse.

Robot Movies

Complement the toys with a robot movie on DVD

Wall-e will obviously be the top robot movie of 2008, but there are some earlier movies featuring robots that all kids can still enjoy, and these are great stocking stuffers to give along with robot toys. Flicks such as Robots and Iron Giant were both popular when released and are still available on DVD. (See below.) Other movies that are OK for older kids and which feature robots include the 1998 movie Lost in Space, based on the 1960s TV series, and, of course, the entire Star Wars series featuring everyone's favorite robots, R2D2 and C3PO.

Iron Giant DVD

A movie for all ages

I've lost track of how many times I've seen this movie with my son and daughter, but I still don't mind when they watch it. "Iron Giant" is a wonderful story of a robot befriended by a young boy who then tries to hide his huge new friend from his mom and a government agent. It's got some great messages for kids and adults alike. A definite two thumbs up for any robot-lover.

Amazon says: Newly programmed at our ultra-modern factory, this state-of-the-art R2 series astromech droid unit is ready to obey your commands. Grab his attention by saying "Hey, R2" and he's ready for more than 40 voice commands. Ask him if he remembers his famous friends, like Luke Skywalker, C-3PO or Jabba the Hutt. Each name will stir up a different response depending on R2's "feelings" for that character. Just a few of R2's amazing attributes include moving along on his own, turning his front beam on and off, and even playing a secret message when you follow the proper voice commands. In "Game" mode, R2 plays multiple games and spins, dances and plays music. He even guards your room with his sentry alarm.

Do You Own a Robot? Or Have a Favorite Movie Robot?

Tell us about it!

dannystaple wrote...

I own a huge collection of robots, and blog about them at http://orionrobots.co.uk. I build robots. The NXT is my favourite toy with the NXT being a close second. I have MegaBYTE and Tekno dogs and PINO. So far I have not sprung for a WowWee robot yet, and I do not think I will own an AIBO or QRIO any time soon though.
As for movie robots - there is none that comes close to Jonny Five.
