Roccat Kone Gaming Mouse

Ranked #3,331 in Computers & Electronics, #65,884 overall

What Is The Roccat Kone?

The Kone is the first gaming mouse released by Roccat, a German manufacturer and newcomer to the gaming accessory scene. It is packed full of features to make it one of the most technically advanced gaming mice you can currently buy.

Officially, the specification of the Kone is as follows:

  • Pro-Aim Gaming Sensor with true 3200 dpi
  • 6.5 megapixel resolution
  • 7080 fps (Frames Per Second)
  • 20G / 1.65m per second acceleration
  • 1ms response time
  • 1000Hz polling rate
  • Integrated 40MHz Turbo Core Unit
  • 96kB of internal memory
  • 5 profiles for ultra-long macros
  • Individually adjustable light effects
  • Fastclip Weight Kit with 4 easy to clip-in weights (5g, 10g, 15g and 20g)
  • 10 mouse buttons (8 programmable) and 4D scroll-wheel
  • Hybrid shape for right-handers
  • Ultra-silent mouse feet
  • 2m USB cable
  • Dimensions: 13x7x3.5 cm (LxWxH)

That's a pretty impressive list of features. So could the Roccat Kone be considered the best gaming mouse for the PC?

Buyer Beware!

If you're buying a Roccat Kone make sure you pick up a Version 2! Problems with the scroll wheel meant that a revised version had to be quickly released.

Multi-colour LEDs - looks good!

Tracking Control Unit (TCU)

What makes the Roccat Kone stand out from the crowd?

It's most interesting feature is the new Tracking Control Unit (TCU). This is a sensor that detects when the mouse has been picked up from the mouse mat, and then immediately freezes the cursor.

If you've ever had the problem where you're in the middle of a frantic Counterstrike match, your mouse hits the edge of your pad so you pick it up to reposition it only to find that you're now looking in a completely different direction - the DCU should help to stop that!

Roccat Kone On Ebay

Online stores like Amazon often off good discounts, but sometimes you'll find the best prices are on Ebay. If you're lucky you can pick up a real bargain, but always check the small print when it comes to returns policies.

How Much Does It Cost?

The Roccat Kone was finally released for sale in October 2008. It is available in the United Kingdom for £59 and in Europe for 69 euros.

However, shop around and you'll find a better price. Check out Amazon for a discount, or Ebay for slightly better prices.

So is the Roccat Kone any good?

Since launch the Roccat Kone has been received with enthusiastic reviews.

Gaming Weapons says "The Roccat Kone gives you everything you'd ever need from a mouse."

XSReviews were really impressed. "Conclusion? I'm blown away. This is hands down the greatest mouse I have ever used."

According to 4players "you get a mouse that ranks among the top gaming mice both in terms of its technology and its finish."

You can check out the long list of awards and glowing reviews on the Kone product page.

Having Problems With Your Roccat Kone?

After the release of the Roccat Kone it became apparent that some mice were suffering a problem where the scroll wheel failed after a few weeks. Roccat have been quick to find a fix for this and have released the Kone V2 to address the problem.

If you're looking to buy a Roccat Kone make sure you check that it is a V2 and not one of the original design.

New Packaging For Roccat Kone

After early mice were having problems with their scroll wheel, Roccat released a new version that used stronger parts (unofficially dubbed the V2 by retailers). Until recently there was no way of telling the difference between a Kone with the old or the new parts, but now there is - Roccat have reissued the Kone in new packaging, so that's what you should be looking for.

Roccat Drivers

If you're looking for drivers for your Roccat Kone, you need to visit the support section of the Roccat website to download them.

The current versions are:
  • Driver 1.29
  • Firmware 1.32

You can also download the manual as a PDF document.

    Looks nice but.. Watch out.
Bought it & Broke in the first 2 weeks.

All ready paid it way overpriced for shipping fee & customs.
Contacted them to get help/service they only refer me to this online store that did not help me more as well.

So now it's just a nice piece of junk that just don't work, Waste of money!
You can make a nice product though if the Service is Shitty like this.. Not worth the money!

Great post. I like such types of news and technology because I am related with rackmount kvm, 1u lcd keyboard drawer, Quad monitor, Screen splitter, 1u rackmount monitor, rack lcd and many more.

For BIG people with BIG hands!

There's no doubt that the Roccat Kone is a high-tech precision gaming mouse with many great features.

It has a 3200 DPI Pro-Aim Gaming Sensor to reduce Pick-Up-Flight; a TCU (Tracking Control Unit) to calibrate the laser power to match the mouse pad surface; an Integrated Turbocore to save CPU power; 128kB of Internal Memory to save up to five Game Profiles; a customisable light system with 5 LEDs capable of displaying the full spectrum of colors; and a FastClip Weight Kit to change the weight of the mouse from 118g by 5g, 10g, 15g and 20g.

But the so-called Ergonomic Hybrid Shape that is supposedly suitable for people with both claw grip or palm grip fails to impress me. If you have large hands then you should find this mouse very comfortable and easy to dominate.

However, if you're like me and have small-medium sized hands then don't be surprised if you get wrist ache and have trouble moving it quickly from side to side. My wrist ache got so bad after the first 5 days I put the Kone back in it's box and got my old faithful Razer Diamondback mouse back into action. The Razer is such a fantastic mouse; it's fast, accurate, and lightweight so you really feel in control of the mouse rather than the mouse controlling you.

In summary, if you've got big hands (Roccat is a German company) then buy the Roccat Kone, otherwise get something smaller like a Razer Diamondback.
