The Art of Rock

The concert poster is a great visual history of rock n' roll that centers on the posters which were created to advertise the musicians and concert venues. With over six decades of concert posters available, these event posters have become a wildly popular collectible that has taken on a life of their own, sometimes outshining the rock bands they were created to promote. The popular art of concert posters allow collectors to collect by music genre, by musician, by poster artist and even by venue or promoter. Concert promoters also created handbill versions of many of their posters and used them as sidewalk handouts and dashboard fliers to promote upcoming shows. Many of these handbills were double-sided, with poster art on one side and a calendar of upcoming shows on the other. These handbills represent an important element of rock concert history because they were hands on marketing tools that united promoter and concert fan. Concert poster are not only avidly collected today but have spawned collectors clubs, groups and annual conventions that celebrate the concert poster such such as Flatstock or The Rock Poster Society (TRPS).

Big Brother and the Holding Company "Top Hat" Avalon Concert Poster Family Dog 1966

Victor Moscoso Art

Big Brother and the Holding Company "Top Hat" Avalon Concert Poster Family Dog 1966

This is a great poster starring Janis Joplin and the Holding Company from December, '66, featuring the top-hatted Indian mascot of Chet Helm's Family Dog Productions. Joining Janis and the boys that night were Oxford Circle and keyboard whiz Lee Michaels. Victor Moscoso provided the tripped-out graphics.

The 1st printing measures 14 3/16" x 18" and has "The Bindweed Press, San Francisco" credit in the lower right hand corner. It was printed before the concert.

The post-concert 3rd printing measures 14" x 20 3/8" and deletes the Bindweed credit, adding instead " Family Dog Productions, 1725 Washington Street, San Francisco" to the lower right hand corner. "No. 38-3" is in the lower left hand corner.

The 4th printing measures 14" x 20" and has "No. 38-4" in the lower left hand corner, and "1967 (c) Family Dog Productions 639 Gough St., San Francisco, Calif. 94102" in the lower right hand corner. It was printed after the concert.

Grace Slick & the Great Society Fillmore Auditorium 1966 BG-25

Poster Art by Wes Wilson

Grace Slick and the Great Society / 13th Floor Elevators - Fillmore Auditorium Concert Poster (Bill Graham Presents, 1966).

A young Grace Slick peers out from the front of this tough to find poster. At the time Grace was fronting her band The Great Society, and they had already written "Someone to Love," a song that would become legend when recorded later by Jefferson Airplane. The groups featured on this poster include 13th Floor Elevators, Great Society, and Sopwith Camel. Because this poster is part of the Bill Graham numbered series, it is designated BG-25. Wes Wilson's lettering style has now become signature and was recognizable in other, contemporary print advertising. The overall size is 13 11/16" x 21".

The back of the 1st printing glows under a black light, is printed on a .0070" thick or less stock and measures 13 11/16" x 21". This original printing pre-dates the concert.

The back of the 1967 post-concert 2nd printing does not glow under a black light, is printed on .0075" thick stock and measures 13 11/16" x 21".

The back of the 3rd printing poster is similar to the 2nd in that it does not glow under a black light. On this printing, there is a 1 3/4" red line stretching from the top of the "L" to the top of the second "E" in the word "Elevators". This printing measures 13 11/16" x 20 15/16".

Blues Project Avalon Ballroom FD-005 Family Dog 1966

Poster Art by Wes Wilson

type=text

Blues Project, Avalon Ballroom Concert Poster FD-005 (Family Dog, 1966). Lots of firsts are associated with this poster, which helped kick off the Family Dog's long run of shows at San Francisco's Avalon Ballroom. The Family Dog's logo mascot, a joint-smoking, top-hatted Indian, made his first appearance here, for a show featuring the Blues Project and the Great Society Poster art by Wes Wilson

The pre-concert 1st printing measures 14" x on uncoated index. It drops the union logo and the "Gillette" credit of the 2nd printing, but "No.5-3" is in the lower right corner, and the Washington Street address appears in the lower left. It was printed after the concert, sometime between October 1966 and January 1967.

The 4th printing is actually a folded version of the poster that was inserted in the January 1967 issue of CA Magazine: The Journal of Communicative Art, which had an article on psychedelic posters. It was printed after the concert on thin white paper, and some collectors refer to this printing as an oversized handbill, as its dimensions are 12 3/8" x 15 1/2".

The Art of the Fillmore: The Poster Series 1966-1971

Book by Gayle Lemke

The Art of the Fillmore: The Poster Series 1966-1971 By Gayle LemkeLegendary impresario Bill Graham began in January 1966 to commission posters to promote the concerts he was putting on at San Francisco's Fillmore Auditorium. The poster artists followed the revolutionary mandate of the sixties consciousness, creating vivid, irreverent banners that reflected their own sense of poetics, style, and wit. What resulted were signature, juxtapositions of design, lettering, and color that spawned a brand new art form. Their muse was the cosmic synergy that then abounded, fueled in part by LSD. These posters have since come to occupy a place in art history while surviving priceless artifacts of rock archeology. Published in cooperation with Bill Graham Presents, this is an intoxicating compendium of the funkiest posters of the century. Highlighted in this unique, lavishly printed full-color volume are the original numbered and unnumbered series created exclusively for the San Francisco and New York Fillmore dance concerts. The more than 400 hand-drawn posters, handbills, tickets, and photographs feature art by Wes Wilson, Bonnie MacLean, Stanley Mouse, Alton Kelley, Rick Griffin, Lee Conklin, Greg Irons, Randy Tuten, David Byrd, David Singer, and Norman Orr.

Captain Beefheart & his Magic Band "Red Bull" Family Dog Avalon Ballroom 1966

FD-013 Poster Art by Stanley Mouse

Captain Beefheart & his Magic Band "Red Bull" Family Dog Avalon Ballroom 1966

Captain Beefheart and his Magic Band "Red Bull" Avalon Concert Poster FD-013 Family Dog, 1966.

Captain Beefheart and his Magic Band "Red Bull" Avalon Ballroom Concert Poster FD-13 Family Dog, 1966. The Dada-Rock star best known at that time for his cover version of "Diddy Wah Diddy" headlined this early Family Dog show, with opening act Oxford Circle. This is a first printing copy, and a nice example of this tough-to find, Stanley Mouse designed, item. It measures approximately 14 3/16" x 20".

The 1st printing posters are of varying quality; some are sharp and others muddy because of printing problems in the original run. The irregularities consist mostly of red ink smearing and extending outside the black border, into the lettering or bull image. The poster is 14 3/16" x 20" and was printed on vellum before the concert.

The post-concert 2nd printing is 14 3/8" x 20" on white index and shows "No.13-2" in the lower right corner and the Washington Street address in the lower left corner.

Jimi Hendrix Fillmore East Concert Poster

Poster Art by David Byrd

Jimi Hendrix Fillmore East Concert Poster

Jimi Hendrix Fillmore East Concert Poster, (Bill Graham / Fantasy Unlimited, 1968).

Jimi Hendrix liked David Byrd's drawing on this poster so much that he later asked the artist to design a press kit cover for him. Byrd used a drop-bow compass to draw the little circles, and he labored to get Hendrix's hair "... Just right." Hendrix was at the height of his career in mid-1968, and he did two shows for the one-night-only concert. Sly & the Family Stone, not mentioned on the poster, was the second band. Just starting to get airplay, Sly was relatively unknown and was heckled by a crowd that couldn't have cared less who was opening up for Hendrix.

The 1st printing poster pre-dates the concert and measures 14 3/16" x 22 3/4". Beneath the date and time information, the notation "Fantasy Unlimited 1968, Bill Graham, N.Y. No 7" can be found.

The 2nd printing poster is significantly larger, measuring 15 9/16" x 23 13/16". This reprint bears an additional notation, "2nd printing- (c) 1987, Bill Graham Enterprises, Inc", to the right of the Fantasy Unlimited credit. It was printed in 1987.

by Spenser Drate

Swag: Rock Posters of the 90's by Spenser DrateAn outrageous mix of indie cool, punk-retro aesthetics, camp, and kitsch, the concert posters of the 1990s became so wildly popular that they took on a life of their own, sometimes outshining the rock bands they were created to promote. Not only are they avidly collected today, but an annual two-day convention known as Flatstock now exists to celebrate the works of the leading artists and designers. Exploding with color and bold graphics, this awesome collection of the best rock posters of the decade is the only book in print that examines and illustrates this important movement in graphic design. Teeming with more than 250 posters by over 50 designers, Swag is a groundbreaking introduction to the world of concert poster art, and a look at the cutting-edge music it was created for, from Nirvana and Pearl Jam to Sonic Youth and the Velvet Underground. The visionaries of the genre are all here, including Frank Kozik, Coop, Jermaine Rogers, Stefan Sagmeister, and Brian Ewing. An insightful foreword by Art Chantry, Seattle's iconoclastic genius of rock poster design, accompanies this collection of visually arresting images compiled by noted author and designer Spencer Drate. Jefferson Airplane The Original Fillmore House Band

Jefferson Airplane Fillmore Auditorium Concert Poster BG-63 Bill Graham 1967 Bonnie MacLeanIt's been said that Jefferson Airplane made the Fillmore, and the Fillmore made Jefferson Airplane. The Fillmore was the original house that rock built and Bill Graham was the man who ruled it. Jefferson Airplane would be the first band to play there and would headline fifty-nine times in less than two years, which were the most defining years in rock, 1966 and 1967.

When the British Invasion made its electric splash on American shores, the effects rippled across the country in a wave of guitar-strumming kids starting bands with their friends.

It was then that Jefferson Airplane came to be, and it was then that Bill Graham became the first impresario of rock.Graham, in a blue-collared shirt with the ever present clipboard, and the folk-based, soon to be psychedelic troubadours Jefferson Airplane, launched their fledgling careers simultaneously. The seemingly contrary forces fed, nurtured, and matured each other, connecting in an interdependent dance that would give rise to the other in turn.

Jefferson Airplane The Original Fillmore House Band
Former Bill Graham Presents Archivist Katherine York sifted through the documented heritage of Jefferson Airplane and studied the band's relationship with the burgeoning rock concert industry to uncover the tale of the first Fillmore house band. The resulting box set includes a 76 page book which chronicles the maturity of both in a timeline drawn of memorabilia including rare posters, unseen photographs and original performance contracts.

Jefferson Airplane Box Set

The 30 songs on the accompanying USB were selected from over 35 hours of live concert recordings performed by Jefferson Airplane and recorded by Bill Graham on his stages. The USB includes the entire collection in two audio formats - a set of 320k mp3 files, and a set of CD-quality Apple Lossless files. The remastered compilation has been curated to exemplify the band's development while playing these venues and is presented in a timeline that can be followed throughout the book.

I met Hamersveld in Chicago at Tower Records in 2005. He and his wife were very nice folks and were there selling copies of these posters and another set he created of Jimi Hendrix. I only bought the CD design set they had there also, had him sign two copies and chatted with both of them for a bit. Very cool moment, very cool people.
