Nikki Sixx of Motley Crue writes a book called Heroin Diaries
It seems that rock stars like Nikki Sixx have a far greater chance of becoming drug addicts than normal people. Seems kind of obvious why that would be. They pretty much have millions of dollars floating around them. They have plenty of spare time on their hands while they are out on tour. Most gigs last 2 hours or so and then they go to a motel or sit on a bus. So they spend their time using drugs.
I would like to use a recent book that was written by a Rock Star as sort of a guide in my quest to find out more about rock star s and their drug habits. This book is written by the founding member of Motley Crue. He can play his bass as hard and loud as any other rocker. He can also share some pretty wild tales about his drug days touring with his band Motley Crue!

Review of Chapter 1
Review of Chapter OneNikki's Book is made up of a collection of journal entries he made during the period from Christmas of 1987 until Christmas of 1988. It was during this time that Nikki dove the deepest he could into heroin. His drug invested thoughts are written down in journals and this book is the result.
The book is hard covered with a paper cover. The cover has a very grungy appearance. Very distressed looking with splashes of paint and two images of Nikki blended together. The pages of the book follow this same theme with splashes of paint or blood though-out the pages. Very graphical images of Nikki and other band member appear though out the pages. Plenty of photos of other famous rock stars that were friends or toured with Motley Crue.
There is a 13 song sound track that you can purchase separately from Nikki's new band. One song for each chapter of the book.
After introductions from people such as Alice Cooper,and Ian Gittins, Chapter 1 starts with an entry in a new journal from Dec 25th 1986.

Chapter 2 Review Heroin Diaries!Chapter 2 starts with Nikki introducing us to Vanity. Vanity used to date pop star Prince and was a back up singer in his band. Then she was Nikki's closet bet to a friend. And the closest drug buddy Nikki had...
Vanity came by Nikki's Van Nuys mansion to visit on Jan. 1st She doesn't stay to long and Nikki spends first part of month scuffling around his mansion and doing drugs with various people. Some of his entries into the journal during this time talk about his drug habits and how he cooks his drugs. Most of the entries talks about the illusions of paranoid feelings he has while he is high.
Notable entry on the 14th of Jan 1987 where Nikki was high on heroin and decided that all the platinum disc (music awards) hanging on his walls weren't awards after all, but simply small tokens for his hard work. He got mad at his record company for treating him like a cash cow and he proceeded to rip all the awards off his walls and dumped them in the garage. Later he felt stupid and brought them all back in and lined them up along the wall where they used to hang.
On the 15th of Jan. 1987 Nikki rode his Chopper to the studio to begin making a new album. He had to stop at a Denny's to use the bathroom to shot up some cocaine along the way.
Nikki spends next week or so in studio with his band mates as they slowly realize that their founding band member is addicted to heroin. None of the band says anything to Nikki about what they are finding out. I guess they don't want to rock the boat!

Tonight started off with a bang. I scored some old school loads from this black cat who sells porno out of his house in Van Nuys.. he also had some china white. We headed out to the Cathouse and it was way cool...... What a meat market that place is, girls galore.... Back into the club, back out to the car with a different chick..on and on.
So how did it all change? How did I end up crouched behind my bed with my gun?
The rest of Feb. is full of Nikki having partys with Slash from Guns and Roses and Robin Crosby from Ratt! Alot of good tales about some girls and Nikki!

Nikki spends some time with a porn star and decides to talk about global poverty instead of giving the girl what she came for. Nikki! She gets frustrated and leaves.
Nikki gets a note from his accountant telling Nikki he is spending 5,000 dollars a day, and does the math for Nikki to let him know he will be broke in 11 months at that rate. Broke, if not dead.

This months entries talk alot about band rehearsals and hiring background singers. Nikki is excited about the stage set up and usual band type stuff. He is staying sober except for drinking Jack Daniels. Well that is until the 18th when Vanity shows up to go out on tour with Nikki. I guess she stressed him out so much that he had to have a shot in the bathroom after she went to sleep.
The band starts their Girls Girls Girls Tour in Tucson AZ.
There are many entries where Nikki talks about using cocaine, but he is still of Heroin. He considers it drug free I think!

Girls Girls Girls tour is in full swing and the motley boys are feeling the wear and tear on their bodies! Nikki is still staying clean from heroin but is doing lines of cocaine and popping pills. Plus he is drinking Jack Daniels every day.
*Notable diary entry on July 4th 1987 in Little Rock Arkansas* This is the day that I seen Motley Crue in concert!! I was 17 years old! It was one of the best days of my life! The entry in Nikkis diary for this day talks about Nikki missing his grandmother Nona.
Nikki and Motley Crue are still touring and he is staying off the heroin. Nikki is drinking heavily and either snorting or shooting cocaine on most nights. Nikki has an interesting encounter with a couple women on the 9th!
Nikki mentions using zombie dust on the 13th plus his usual drinking Jack Daniels. He is using alot of drugs but staying clean of the heroin. Guess we can call the Girls tour a cocaine tour!

This month the band is heading out towards New York to continue the Girls Girls Girls Tour of 1987! New York is not a good place for Nikki when he is trying to kick a heroin habit. All the usual cock roach heroin dealers are hunting Nikki down and it wont take them long to find him!
Notable entry on the 6th of August about Tommy and Nikki stealing the limo and crashing it while the limo driver watched in horror.
Once Nikki hits New York he is off to his usual tail spin ride on the heroin coat tail. The demons have surrounded him and slapped him in the face with full force.The band spends most of the month stationed in New York and playing concerts in and around there. It is a hard month for Nikki and the drugs take their toll on his body. The shows get longer and his body gets more tired every night.

The non stop drug tour of 1987 continues and Nikki is the star of the show! His body is torn and battered and his mind starting to weaken.
Nikki and Motley Crue take a break from touring in the middle of the month and Nikki heads home to Van Nuys and his mansion.
Nikki had a ten foot security gate installed around his house while he was away. Hoping it will keep the drug fiends from coming around while he is home.
He is only home one day before Jason is ringing the buzzer at the new gate. Nikki brushes him off!
On the 11th Nikki gets a surprise visit from Vanity. It doesn't go very well! They end up fighting and cops are called.
On the 12th Nikki falls for it deep, shooting cocaine and surrendering himself to his closet again. Then on the 13th he is set up with some more drugs and he spends the next 5 days getting high with various people. When it is time to leave for the next leg of the Girls tour, Nikki is totally drained, but happy to be getting away from his home.
The Girls Tour continues taking Nikki and the gang back threw Texas! After the Dallas Texas shows they all go out to strip clubs. Nikki writes that between him and the rest of the group they spent $25,000 in one night.
Near the end of the month Robbin Crosby from Ratt joins Nikki for some wild fun.

The first of this month finds Nikki back at home in his Van Nuys mansion. Nikki has an ounce of "rock" cooked up and brought over, and just as he hits his crack pipe for the first time an earthquake starts to rattle his home. Nikki runs outside naked and waving his pipe and gets locked out and has to break a back window to get back inside. He then goes and flushes the rest of his drugs down the toilet.
After Nikki flushes all his drugs away, he stays sober for the next 4-5 days and has a kick ass concert in LA, then Vanity shows up with a huge amount of coke and its back to the trenches for Nikki. The second night of the back to back LA shows, Nikki barely makes it there. He has been up all night and day stoned out of his mind. The only reason he even made it to the show was because someone sent a car to get him.
Nikki barely manages to make it thru his set and heads straight back home afterwards. Back to his drugs and his closet.
The next show comes on the 10th and again Nikki misses the jet and the band starts freaking out. Doc- the bands manager sends another jet to get Nikki to the show on time. When Nikki arrives the band holds a meeting and confronts Nikki about his problems. But Nikki is on a downward spiral and it isn't a very far trip to the bottom.
For the next concert Nikki invites his mother and sister to the show, only to throw them both out of the arena after the show in a drug induced fit of rage.
Nikki and the band head off to Canada for a few sold out shows and lots of coke and girls. Nikki's drug use while in Canada is very heavy and pretty much gets him strung out. The end of the month is spent with days off and messing around with Tommy and making the video for Your All I Need.

The band and Nikki are sent back out on tour on the 3rd. Nikki had stayed sober for the last few days and is feeling really good. The Girls Tour is heading down South and the boys from Guns n Roses join Motley Crue for the tour. Nikki writes about some cocaine use on the 6th. The whole band is pretty much involved. More drug use on the 8th. And again on the 13th! Nikki likes his drugs I guess. Plus touring with a wild band like Guns n Roses added to the fire I'm sure.
The Girls tour continues threw the south with G n R opening for them. Lots of drugs, girls, alcohol, and mayhem. Theres hotel furniture in elevators, crying fans wishing for autographs, and smiling groupies at every corner. Just more fun and mayhem for the Motley Gang!

I am not going to review this chapter much other than to say it may have been the worst month of Nikki's life and I am surprised he is even here to publish his book. I am pretty sure that this final month of December 1987 is the month that made Nikki find a way to get off the junk.
Congrats Nikki on over coming your demons and giving all of us so many years of great Rock n Roll music.

- Hey did you know his life story is also going to be on Fuse!!! Fuse's new TV show is called Live Through This. The show explores the dramatic stories of rock stars that have hit rock bottom and managed to heroically bounce back to the top. The first installment will explore Nikki Sixx and his brush with death, and will air on fuse TV on Thursday, February 21st at 10pm.
