RocketMoms: a lensography

RocketMoms? RocketMoms is a group of like-minded Lensmasters on Squidoo who work together and help each other in lenscrafting, networking and lots more!

RocketMoms have their own template and their own Top 100 and it occurred to me that unless I was careful, it would be difficult to keep track of the lenses I made using the template. Hence this Lensography.

I have really enjoyed being part of the first ever RocketMoms cohort. The lessons I learned and the benefits of being part of this very friendly group will be summarised at the end of this lens when the course is over.

RocketMoms? How did it start?

How did I get involved in RocketMoms?

The first I heard about RocketMoms was a brief message on the SquidBlog that asked who was a Mom (that's Mum in the UK) on Squidoo. Ever the internet and Squidoo Pandora, I responded saying yes, I was a Mum.

The next thing that happened was I got an email from Bonnie Diczhazy (who is also a Giant Squid Organiser) saying that "something" was being planned and to stand by. In the meantime I received an invitation from Squidoo Community Advisor Kimberly, inviting me to apply for the position of Squidoo Angel. And then somewhere along the line Chef Keem asked me if I would like to become an author on SquidLog.

In the UK we have a joke that you will wait for what seems like an eternity for a bus and then three come along at once!

How could I possibly turn any of these exciting projects down?

What do RocketMoms do?

What are the aims of RocketMoms?

The Home Page of the RocketMoms Ning says:

This is a 6 week exclusive program for only about 60 or so women on Squidoo. The main point is to meet each other, get creative with new lenses, and have fun.

There is a good mix of new, not so new and more experienced Lensmasters, who all have two things in common: they are female and they have children.

A Lensmaking Task is set each week and the aim is to have made at least six lenses by the end of the six week period. Although I have now been on Squidoo nine months, it has been great to have someone to set some goals for me AND some deadlines!

The danger of working independently is that you will get set in your ways and not try something new. RocketMoms certainly gets you doing something new and as a result of the programme I have made two lenses that I would probably have NOT made, had it not been for Bonnie's task setting.

RocketMoms: Week 1

Task: Make an About Me lens

Had I not been set this task then I would not have thought about making another "About Me" lens. I figured that I'd done enough of those already!

Converting lenses to the RocketMoms template

We were allowed to nominate two lenses

Once the RocketMoms template was available, we were allowed to nominate two existing lenses to convert to the template. I nominated two of my most relevant lenses, which are about my youngest children (I have four), Sparky and Lizzie.

RocketMoms: Week 2

Task: Make a "niche" lens

This Task gave me the impetus to start a niche that I had been planning for quite some time. I started on the Time Management lens but then realised I was saying a lot about Procrastination so I split the lens into two!

RocketMoms: an additional optional Task

Task: Make a Top 10 lens

This Task was set in Week 2 but because of my other Squidoo Projects, such as writing on SquidLog and my duties as a Squidoo Angel, I did not complete it until Week 4. This lens was already planned and was a real labour of love.

RocketMoms: Week 3

Make a recipe lens

Another topic that I had thought about but had not done. I already had the photos so this lens was relatively easy to put together.

RocketMoms networking

RocketMoms have their own Forum

A RocketMoms Ning has been established and all Tasks are set via the Ning. This obviously makes it easier for Bonnie to get messages out to everyone but what I really like about RocketMoms is that it gives you the opportunity to get to know new Lensmasters who you may not have come across before on Squidoo.

There's lots of different threads on the Ning Forum and if anyone has any problems with any aspect of lensmaking, then there is bound to be someone who will know the answer.

RocketMoms: Week 4

Make a travel lens

When I look back, I was daft! I chose a trip we did years ago AND before we had a digital camera, so I had to scan the photos in to Photoshop and then do some editing and fixing. Why did I not choose a more recent trip? Doh!

I challenge any Mom not to identify with this!

Week 4: optional task

Make a lens that has a donation module

Save the Children: The Charity that most of my lenses donate to

A proportion of the revenue from this Lens donates to Save The Children. As this lens is about Mums making lenses, I thought this would be the most appropriate charity.

Save the Children is the leading independent organization creating lasting change in the lives of children in need in the United States and around the world. Recognized for our commitment to accountability, innovation and collaboration, our work takes us

We at Squidoo passionately believe in creating new ways to support good causes online. By making a donation to Save the Children from this page, you are sending money directly to that organization, in whatever amount you want. We don't touch it. We don't even see it. The author of this page doesn't either. And if you made it this far, thanks for caring.

Rocket Moms: Week 5

Make a "holiday" lens

On setting the Task, Bonnie said: Be creative, share a Holiday from your native country, get a leg up on Christmas, start Halloween early, or like Heather do a tribute lens about someone you love. The sky is the limit on this one.

RocketMoms: Week 6

Make a Lensography

Bonnie explains: The term Lensography was term first coined by Giant Squid The Fluffanutta. Very simply it's a collection of your lenses divided up into catagories.

Every Lensmaster should have a Lensography. It's kind of like a business card, resume, compilation and biography all rolled up into one! It's a must for Giant Squids!
