Montana Red Dog, The Beatles & Friends Rock for Dogs

Organized by: Roxy_Calamari, a Yorkshire Terrier
Roxy's Guest Commentator: DrmJ, a Singer/Songwriter and Music Journalist

Yup, that's me. My secret's out! I'm a dog. The other day after the Virtual Concert for Charity contest was announced, I threw on my "Bad To The Bone" t-shirt, grabbed my shades, and went to jam with some of my musician friends. Paul McCartney of The Beatles was there, as well as a special friend of mine DrmJ whose music aired on Pittsburgh radio stations as "Montana Red Dog". We got into this great conversation about the influence dogs have had on music.

Dogs have been the subject of many hit songs . . . Elvis Presley's hit, Hound Dog, Bird Dog by the Everly Brothers, Led Zepplin's Black Dog, and of course Hey Bulldog by The Beatles. The conversation then turned to the plight of homeless dogs and we agreed that we needed to do something to help them. That's how the idea for Dog Rock: A Benefit Concert for Dogs was conceived. Songs featured in this concert have the word "dog" in the title and are performed by some of rock music's greatest artists.

The Dog Rock concert is dedicated to dogs everywhere, to dogs of all breeds and mixed breeds, to pups and seniors, and especially to my brother and sister dogs who are homeless and starving on the streets or are counting their days on death row in an "open door" shelter. Throughout the concert, my guest commentator DrmJ and I will be talking more about canine over-population and offering some excellent Roxy-approved dog products for our audience to purchase.

100% of the money made by Dog Rock will be donated to the ASPCA, an organization committed to the prevention of cruelty to animals...and that includes working to solve pet overpopulation and helping to get homeless dogs off the streets and into loving homes like mine.

Vote for the greatest "dog" song performance!

Roxy: Vote for the greatest "dog" song. If your favorite isn't on the list, feel free to add it. The word "dog" must be in the song title and the song must be in a "rock" genre. DrmJ, what's your favorite?

DrmJ: Hands down, the greatest "dog rock" song is Hey Bulldog by The Beatles. Roxy, what's your pick?

Roxy: I am a big fan of Led Zeppelin, so it would have to be Black Dog!

Facts About Homeless Dogs (and Cats)

DrmJ: Roxy, did you know that according to the Humane Society of the United States, between 6 and 8 million dogs and cats enter shelters each year and of that number only half are adopted?

Roxy: Yes, and the other half are euthanized (killed). Oh, and did you know that 25% of the dogs in shelters are purebreds like me?

Support No-Kill Shelters

Roxy: Did you know that most animal shelters euthanize (kill) those animals they deem "unadoptable" or that are not adopted in an arbitrary number of days? Most "open door" shelters euthanize a large percentage of their population.

DrmJ: Also, there are no standards for shelters. Individually they have the power to decide who lives and who dies.

Roxy: Yes, DrmJ. That is why I support "no-kill" shelters and rescues. Most are operated solely by donations and depend on volunteers.

DrmJ: The Best Friends Animal Society is such an organization. They also help people and organizations establish spay/neuter, shelter, foster and adoption programs in their communities.

Grab a kleenex for the final song!

Roxy_Calamari: We have to wrap up the Dog Rock concert now. We have time for one last song. DrmJ, I know you are a musician and a music journalist. You must have a favorite song about a dog that would be appropriate for our grand finale.

DrmJ: Yes I do, Roxy. Although this is a rock concert, let's close with a country song. I'm certain our dog lover audience will shed a few tears.

Roxy: Hope we ordered enough Kleenex for our audience!

DrmJ: Hey, Roxy, check out the "junior" sized kleenex I ordered for you. Should be just about right for a pint-sized pooch like you. He...he...he...!
