Why Improve Your Website
Every website exists for a cause, and if that cause isn't fully considered during the web design you can end up with a very confusing and not very useful website. For any business to flourish on the web, the website has to have an attractive design with proper page layout and good content which conveys the message of your site.
Your website design and its content should be attractive enough to grab the visitor's attention but not detract from the content. To accomplish this goal you must have a clear concept of your business objectives before you start designing your website. At Blackstone Publishing we have learnt a couple of things about website design and hope these tips give you a good starting point.
How to Improve Your Website Design
Even though the Internet has come a long way and provides much faster faster speeds, you should always keep in mind that there are still people who use dial-up. It is necessary that your website should load within a reasonable time on any connection to avoid visitor frustrations. You can also try to avoid the use of banners, heavy graphics and animations which will increase load time.
2. Value Time
You must value your visitor's time which can be accompished with the above tip of reasonable load time but also by not rambling too much. This creates a positive impression on your visitors. Do not keep the visitors waiting for the site to load. If your site does take time to load, you should have a graphic showing loading progress rather than the visitors staring at a blank site.
3. Provide Options
Do not start to play your audio and video files automatically. Give the visitors the option to play the files if they choose. Starting an audio or video file may distract the visitors and that could be an end to your business effort. It is quite popular to include a video or audio file in websites these days but remember to be respectful.
4. Text Size
The text size of your web pages should be large enough for the web visitors to read comfortably. This is one of the most important factors in your web page design. It should not be too large that gives an amateurish appearance to your website but not too small as to be unreadable.
5. Color choice
Make sure that you choose colors for your website which do not look odd or unproffessional. Your background should preferably be white, but if you should use a colored background your texts should be visible for the visitors to read comfortably. Black and white combination is the easiest on the eyes for your visitors.
6. Clear Links
The links that you provide on your site should be clearly identified and hyperlinked to the right destination, so that the visitors are taken to the relevant pages. This is generally a blue underlined text.
7. Use of Flash
Use Flash applications cautiously. Remember that unnecessary Flash applications on your website may distract visitors and they are liable to leave without reading your site. Flash also takes a long time to load.
8. Compatibility with browsers
Your website design considerations should take into account all the known browsers available today. If your website is not compatible with some of the browsers it would become inaccessible to many of the visitors and you will lose business.
