Rock Paper Scissors!

Do you remember playing Rock, Paper, Scissors when you were growing up?

My 4 year old son loves to play this game with us.

But did you know that now this is a represented SPORT?  There are actually Rock, Paper, Sizzors Tournaments and Championships!

Just like The World Series Of Poker went from a small home game to a world event every year with millions of dollars to the winners, Rock, Paper, Scissors is coming up from the rear right behind Poker to have World events.

In 2006 there was only $50,000 for the winner but as each year passes more and more people will join in and want to win the money and the bragging rights of being the winner!

The United States Association of Rock Paper Scissors, USARPS Hosts The Championships!

The Winner Walks Away With $50,000!

The first championships for Rock, Paper, Scissors
(RPS)was held in 2006 at the Mandalay Bay Hotel in Las Vegas, Nevada.

The winner was Dave McGill who won $50,000!

Hey! That's easier than playing football and less stressful than playing Poker, don't you think?

It was such a great success that they are putting this event on again in 2007 and the new winner will also win $50,000.

I think that as this sport takes off more money will be put up, more sponsors, more prizes. So how about getting off your butt and start throwing down!

Find a local area tournament and start honing up on your reflexes, wrist movement and mental stamina!

So You Want To Compete In Rock Paper Scissors?

Then Here Are The Rules!

The World RPS Association has established the rules and guidelines so that there can be a universal standard to play Rock Paper Scissors by.

First the players have to agree about how many primes are to be used prior to the approach. Two and three primes are what is normally used in most professional level play.

The players establish the number of rounds to be played before the match is over. If no agreement can be reached, the game defaults to a single round game.

There is a "pre-Prime" part to the game. This is where you have to make yourself clear in a way the other person can hear you and agree on how you are going to deliver your throws.

You are only allowed to use a closed fist in priming for the throw and the actual approach. Usually there are two primes and then the approach. The approach is when you deliver the hand into Rock, Paper, or Scissors.

Now the way you deliver Rock,Paper and Scissors is taken right from the World RPS rule book:

"Rock: represented by a closed fist with the thumb resting at least at the same height as the topmost finger of the hand. The thumb must not be concealed by the fingers.Note: To accommodate different throwing styles, it is considered legal for the first knuckle of the thumb to point downward.

Scissors: Is delivered in the same manner as rock with the exception that the index and middle fingers are fully extended toward the opposing player. It is considered good form to angle the topmost finger upwards and the lower finger downwards in order to create a roughly 30-45 degree angle between the two digits and thus mimic a pair of scissors.

Paper: Is also delivered in the same manner as rock with the exception that all fingers including the thumb are fully extended and horizontal with the points of the fingers facing the opposing player. Use of the "vertical paper" (sometimes referred to as "the handshake") is considered exceptionally bad form."

The delivery must be at a 90 degree angle and if it is not the judges will consider your delivery as ROCK.

If both players throw the same delivery that is a tie or stalemate.

Rock beats scissors.
Scissors beats/ cuts paper.
Paper beats/ covers Rock.

These are the basic rules of the game. There are some more complicated matters that are addressed when you are in a world competition.

Good luck and go play for fun! Let us know how you do in the competitions!
