Meeting Rodney White - An American Artist

How wonderful to stumble upon an artist and then find that artist is just like you imagined them through their art and words. That was me when I met Rodney White virtually through the Internet - I fell in deep like right away! What he creates is awesome and how he sees the world around him shows with what he creates!

White's eye hones into the vintage - the pieces that still speak to us today! The art is inspiring, fun and very memorable! I've picked my top five, which are subject to change as I find out more about Rodney White's art. Thanks for stopping in, make sure to give your shout out in the guest book!

Rodney White Talks - Our Interview

December 15, 2009

Rodney White by Edwin Jimenez

On the day that I discovered Rodney's art (seems we are on a first name basis :) I just knew I had to add his information here on Squidoo. After leaving a note in his guest book, wrapping up the lens, the next step was to send him a tweet. Joyfully today I received an e-mail - Hey Correen: Thank you for posting. I can answer some questions for you. Send them thru. So pulled together a few questions that I thought would be interesting to know about Rodney for myself and the reader's.

Enjoy, browse and get inspired!

Born in Augusta, 1976. Lived in Atlanta, Ga from 1997-2005. Now lives and works in Brooklyn, NY

What inspires you to put that first splash of paint on a piece of canvas?
Something I've seen usually. I take in a lot of things I see in my surroundings and seek to evoke the same reaction that I had.

Do you have one all-time favorite piece that you have done and why?
That's such a tricky question. But I like "Self as the oldest human invention". That one was a bit of a surprise to me in the creation process. I remember being at the junkyard with my best friend when I found the '1', which I thought was the corner of a picture frame. We showed each other our findings to kinda brag about what our plans were for them. I showed him and he said, "That is such a cool number 1." I go " No it's the corner of a picture frame." "No, it's a 1." I saw it and was ecstatic to go home and work. I love the piece it turned into.

You are a self-taught artist, how did you do that? Did it just click, did something inspire you?
I drew a lot as kid. On every every blank page I could find. I decided that I wanted to use paint instead of the coloring pencils I had used up to that point. I had dabbled in other subjects, but nothing stuck. I met another artist and it clicked. What was always a fascination, even while growing up, and my newly discovered penchant for writing poetry were gonna meet for the first time.

You're into visiting flea and antique markets with your camera to take unique shots. What camera do you use for taking your photos? Tell us a little bit about why it's your fave.
I used various devices. A Holga, My G10, and a Polaroid. I appreciate what each one provides to the creative end product. They can't replace each other. They each have a monopoly on their creative offering.

Your FutureWhat's your favorite:

Food: Sweet Potato Pie
Movie: Fight Club
Restaurant: Still trying many
Saying: One is my own, and the other is Henry Ford. Henry Ford: "Whether you think that you can, or that you can't, you are usually right. Mine: ""Magic is what happens in the mind first and reality second."
Thing to do on down-time: Down-time? I'm not familiar with that concept.

Giving you a chance to thank one of your teacher's, who would that be and why?
Ray Shead. Ray Shead saw something in me before I did. He helped me not lose because of that.

Thank you Rodney for taking the time to complete this interview, I'll be forever grateful that you did. ~Correen
