Meet Roger Ebert: Two Thumbs Up For One Of The Best Movie Critics

Ranked #19,380 in Entertainment, #236,711 overall

Who Is Roger Ebert?

Roger Ebert must simply be the most famous movie critic of all time. He has been reviewing movies for the Chicago Sun-Times since 1967. He was a television movie critic for 37 years during which time he and a co-host created the pop culture reference 'Two Thumbs Up.' He has received a Pulitzer Prize for his movie reviews and he is the only movie critic to have a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.

There are a handful of movie critics that I enjoy reading or watching that I return to again and again. Critic Roger Ebert is one of those. Although due to problems with cancer he is no longer able to speak, he is still an influential film critic, making extensive use of the written word, which he promotes through the efforts of both himself and his team on the television and online versions of Ebert Presents At The Movies.

On this page, learn a bit more about Roger Ebert and about his movie reviews and books.

Forbes called Roger Ebert, "The most powerful pundit in America."

WHAT DOES TWO THUMBS UP MEAN?

Wikipedia.com reports that 'Two Thumbs Up' is a trademarked phrase.

Whether or not Roger Ebert wants his life work defined by thumbs, it is, at least in part. In the original movie review television program, Siskel & Ebert, Ebert and his partner used the expressions 'Two Thumbs Up!' to represent a movie that they really liked. It was a simple and recognizable way of indicating whether they liked or did not like a film and the phrase has stood the test of time, going on to become a part of pop culture.

I saw Roger Ebert at South by Southwest in Austin this past March. I was a volunteer at one of the theaters he came to. I barely recognized him at first - haven't seem him in a long time and didn't realize how significant his surgery was. His wife is very pleasant and courteous.
