It is true to say that Rolex watches are one of the most desirable of all timepieces.

Rolex SA was founded in 1905 by the German Hans Wilsdorf and his brother-in-law, Alfred Davis. Contrary to popular belief, Hans Wilsdorf was neither Swiss, nor a watchmaker. Wilsdorf & Davis was the original name of what later became the Rolex Watch Company. They originally imported Hermann Aegler's Swiss movements to England and placed them in quality cases made by Dennison and others. These early wristwatches were then sold to jewellers, who then put their own names on the dial. The earliest watches from the firm of Wilsdorf and Davis are usually marked "W&D" - inside the caseback only.

Hans Wilsdorf registered the trademark name "Rolex" in La Chaux-de-Fonds, Switzerland in 1908. The word was made up, and its origin is obscure. One story, which was never confirmed by Wilsdorf, is that the word "Rolex" came from the French phrase horlogerie exquise, meaning exquisite watch industry. Another is that the name was chosen to indicate movement when spoken in English.

The Wilsdorf & Davis company moved out of the United Kingdom in 1912. Wilsdorf wanted his watches to be affordable,[citation needed] but taxes and export duties on the case metals (silver and gold) were driving costs up. From that time to the present, Rolex has been headquartered in Geneva, Switzerland, though the company owns facilities in other cities (Bienne, etc) and continents (North America, Asia, Australia, etc).

The company name Rolex was officially registered on 15 November 1915. It is thought this change was part of a drive to popularize wristwatches, which at the time were still considered a novelty largely for women (pocket watches were more common). Wilsdorf was said to desire his watch brand's name to be easily pronounceable in any language. The company name was officially changed to the Rolex Watch Company during 1919. It was later changed to Montres Rolex, SA and finally Rolex, SA.

Rolex Watches - Real or Fake ?

There's an easy way to tell one of the counterfeit Rolex Watches from a Superb Real Rolex.
With a real Rolex Watch the second hand sweeps continuously around the dial. A Fake however usually ticks around from second to second. Examine a real Rolex Watch and you'll see a super finish all over the timepiece. A fake may well have slightly sharp edges around the bezel or the strap fixings and that's another sign it's not real. Fakes often look too good - on a diamond encrusted watch the diamonds will not be all EXACTLY the same but on a fake they will be identical crystals and will often be poorly set under a magnifier.

The best advice is for you to purchase your Rolex from a genuine authorised Rolex dealer.

If you want a used Rolex watch then probably the best place to look is Ebay - but be quite certain of what you are buying. Ask to see copies of the original receipts or services to authenticate the watch properly.

Buying Rolex Abroad

This can be a very dangerous thing to do !

On the streets of many cities (New York,Rio,Paris etc you may be offered a 'Rolex' for anything from $20 and up.. of course these are fakes and actually wholesale in places like Thailand,Taiwan and Singapore for under $10 (sometimes less !) This means the movement will be very cheap and nasty usually and you should not expect those watches to last more than a couple of months.

The real danger I want to tell you about though is Fake Rolex Dealers.. and there are many of them around the World.
These are usually small Jewellers (not always back-street ones though so beware of flashy new stores too !) displaying the usual Rolex and other Major Brands showcards and advertising materials - sometimes with window stickers and even neon signs.

The ONLY way to tell a genuine Rolex dealer is to go to the Rolex website and download a list of their authorised dealers.
Considering that many models of Rolex cost almost as much as an automobile, it's a sensible precaution. That way you get a real worldwide guarantee that truly is worth the Rolex Name.
(Even the fake Rolexes are sold with fake Rolex Guarantees !)
Two countries to be especially careful are Hong Kong/China and Singapore where there are many fakes sold as being authentic.
Some Major African and South American cities have dealers working the same scam.
Usually these dealers have better quality fakes and these are practically indistinguishable from the real thing as they have a better finish and movement (with a second hand that sweeps rather than ticks !).
One giveaway is the price - usually 30 to 60 percent less than the usual retail price (but that is still a healthy profit for a fake !).
