Professional Writers Bail on Squidoo

The Editors of Rolling Stone Magazine wrote 124 lenses, probably imagining that their efforts would be recognized. If you examine their XML feeds, you'll see they haven't updated anything since about 6 JUN 2006. I wonder if there's a back-story there.

Rolling Stone Rolls Their Own

Did you know that the Editors of Rolling Stone wrote 124 lenses?

Professional writing isn't necessarily better than anybody else's -- "professional" just means somebody's getting paid. On the other hand, these lenses are written to one standard, so they're an indicator of what's popular at Squidoo.

What's Here.

The Rolling Stone Editors' lenses are primarily pointers to articles, album reviews, and videos at Rolling Stone online, but before you get all incensed and give them a poor rating, here's what the Squidoo FAQ says:

"A lens is one person's view on a topic that matters to her. It's an easy-to-build, single web page that can point to blogs, favorite links, RSS feeds, Flickr photos, Google maps, eBay auctions, CafePress designs, Amazon books or music, and more. Then, when someone is looking for recommended information, fast, your lens gets him started and sends him off in the right direction. It's a place for searchers to start, not finish."

This is a great place to start your own lens on any of these 124 featured acts:

Our Value Added Content

We've also added links to artists' and groups' Official Websites and links to Amazon.com's mp3 service where you can get mp3s for very reasonable prices. Finally, there are links to Newsgroups where you can share thoughts, photos, concert information and anything else about your favorites with like-minded fans.

"Official" Sites

We assume that an "official" website is one that is connected with the artist or group featured in some way, often through their recording company. Some unethical webmasters use the word "official" simply as a marketing tool. We have tried to exclude these sites, but we make no guaratees that "official" really means what it says.

Bands and Artists : # - B

Inexplicably, the first three links (starting with numerals) are now dead. Another Squidoo "improvement," no doubt. I'm leaving the links up in case they're ever restored. Besides, you can still access the other links, just not the Rolling Stone Editors' lenses.

I've never quite been sure what distinguishes a blog from a regular webpage. Timeliness seems to have something to do with it, but that doesn't seem to be a hard and fast rule.

Anyway, here are some of the things I've been working on lately...
