Recreation Vehicle or Motor Home? It Works Both Ways!

Who Said You Can't Take it With You? You Can in One of These!
For someone who spent a childhood traveling from Montana and then later, New Mexico across the United States all the way to Pennsylvania, Connecticut, and New Jersey every summer vacation (Mom and Dad were teachers working in Montana and New Mexico--and relatives lived back East), being "on the road" was just another "normal" fact of life.
For the first bunch of years, we did the "roughing it" method--with Sears Ted Williams brand tent. Every night when we pulled into either a private campground, a KOA, or a State or National Park campground, I'd help Dad pull the canvas sack containing the tent off the roof of our Ford Country Squire station wagon and then help to sort out the poles, lay out the ground cloth, tent-peg the tent edges, set up the tent, and lay out the sleeping bags and other gear.
My sis would be helping my mom with the ice chest and (after my Dad also set up the Coleman white gas camp stove) start with getting dinner ready.
There were a few times when we didn't bother to lay out the tent (maybe because the place we stopped wasn't set up for tent camping)--we'd just lay out our sleeping bags on the ground near the car. If wild animals might be a problem or if we were in an area of high vehicle traffic, we'd either set up our sleeping bags on the roof of the station wagon, or if the weather was bad, we'd sleep inside the car.
But during our last few years in New Mexico, my Dad bought a used travel trailer -- a one-wheel, pop-up tent over a storage area that supported a mattress. While driving, the tent would be folded down over the mattress and a canvas cover would be snapped over it. When arriving at a suitable campground, we'd unsnap the cover, and just pull on the supports--and the tent would pop up and we'd have access to all the things inside the storage area and still be out of the weather. Since the tent folded out another 10 feet or so over the side of the trailer, we could set up a camp table inside that part of the tent and be totally out of any bad weather. -- We thought we had found total luxury. For us, it was.
However, with some of the Recreation Vehicles (RVs) or Motor Homes out there now, that "pop-up" trailer we had was still seriously "roughing it". Because you can now have RVs that have built in microwave ovens, televisions with satellite reception, ovens and stoves, bathroom with showers, pop-outs that seem almost roomier than some folks' homes... and all sorts of other goodies. They have come a long way since I used to sleep on the roof of the station wagon in a sleeping bag. To get more ideas on how you can enjoy this freedom on the road, read up more on this topic here.
Oh, this just in... someone has developed an AMPHIBIOUS BUS--just imagine if you could deck this thing out with all the RV goodies...Your next trip to the lake might be a lot more interesting! --Actually, someone did. Scroll down to the bottom of this lens and look for the "TerraWind" video -- it's an Amphibious RV!

- Kampgrounds of America
- This is the KOA (Kampgrounds of America) official website--places to park your RVs for overnight or extended stays. I've stayed at many different KOAs -- Billings, Montana; Silver City, New Mexico; and a lot of others between New Mexico and the East Coast. I've also stayed at the KOA campground between Monterey and Santa Cruz, Califonia. They are all great places to stay--the facilities sometimes vary a bit, but they always have a convenience store, restrooms, showers, and sometimes cabins, swimming pools, and other facilities.

- I have wanted to live on the road for years - but now it looks like it's never going to happen because my husband's health has failed. Still, in my dreams I can travel. This is a great gathering of RV related info. 5* my friend!
