Volunteer in a Romanian Orphanage - Global Volunteer Network www.globalvolunteernetwork.org/romania
Ranked #179 in Volunteering, #34,327 overall
The Program
International volunteers are needed to assist in group homes for children in Romania.
In this program there are four group homes, and volunteers will work with orphans aged from teenage children to young adults. The children have suffered so much at a young age, but with your help they will see a brighter future.
The Global Volunteer Network currently has volunteer opportunities available through our partner organization in Romania. They have taken the children out of substandard conditions in state run homes, and raise them as if they were their own, helping to meet their physical, emotional and spiritual needs. The group homes for disabled orphans are run as closely as possible to a family home. Your job as volunteer will be to act as a family member; either as a mother, father, brother, or sister.
Romania has been through a difficult past, as various leaders and communist rule have led the country to both economic and social ruin. At one time, during communist rule, it was against the law to have an abortion and illegal to use any form of contraceptive. People were encouraged to have four or five children. Industry in the country took massive knock backs and new economic development could only come from outside of Romania.
It is only in the last several years that Romanians have begun to see a brighter future and hope for their families. The gap between rich and poor, however, is still significant.
Poverty is a huge problem and affects the majority of Romanians. Families are stretched financially and this has led to children being abandoned and having to find their own means to make a living if they are not picked up by those that can help them.
GVN serves you to arrange an affordable volunteer opportunity with peace of mind, finanical security, and is a great way for you to contribute to the global community, gain experience, and also fosters personal growth.
Our vision is to support the work of local community organizations in developing countries through the placement of international volunteers. We believe that local communities are in the best position to determine their needs, and we provide volunteers to help them achieve their goals.
In the Orphanage
Each home is run like a family unit, where volunteers will act as a mother, father, brother, or sister. There are opportunities to teach, counsel and help with feeding, cooking and cleaning, depending on your skills and experiences.
There is a huge focus on the children having FUN, being happy and enjoying the rest of their lives. This is in real contrast to the devastating conditions they have experienced in the state run institutions.
Where and When
The group homes are located in Galati district which is about 150 miles from Bucharest (a 3 1/2 hour drive by car). You will be advised on how to get there from the airport. You can start the program at any time during the year. There is a minimum volunteer time of 6 weeks and a maximum of 3 months. Because of the nature of the work, all volunteers are required to obtain a doctor's certificate and a police report.

Sandie and Bruce Tanner, Founders of the Tanner Mission, have been providing shelter and love to abandoned children and young adults for the past 20 years. However, economic pressures have caused the cost of living to almost double, forcing the Tanner Mission to face the very real possibility of having the close the program.
