A Romantic Rooftop Dinner - The Ultimate Date

As an incurable romantic, every day is Valentine's Day for me. Though I feel a true celebration of love doesn't require material gifts, I must admit there is one experience I have always desired. To me, the ultimate date any time of the year would be a romantic rooftop candlelight dinner. It's all about making memories.

Ever since I watched my first romance movie featuring a rooftop date, I have longed to be wined and dined and swept off my feet in that same manner. Though I have received many lovely Valentine's Day gifts over the years, including a marriage proposal, I am still fantasizing about an over the top romantic rooftop dinner.

I'm sure I am not the first woman to imagine how incredible this type of date would be. So why not present your sweetheart with an incredibly inspired date that will always be remembered? Here are some ideas for making this romantic dinner one the love of your life will always treasure.

Picking the Setting

Empire State BuildingDeciding where to have your romantic rooftop or skyline date is one of the first key elements of your Valentine's Day gift planning. Things to be taken into consideration are privacy, the view of course, and access. Maybe because of the romantic movies I have seen, I often have this New York City rooftop dinner fantasy. Why does the Empire State Building come to mind? Oh yes, now I remember... Sleepless in Seattle.

Another prime location would be a rooftop somewhere under a brilliant desert sky — like in my very own backyard. Can you envision the alpenglow of sunset? After dinner, with careful planning, there would be a once-in-a-lifetime display of shooting stars. After making your 50th wish of the night, you would begin to lose count. The stars are still shooting across the sky with no end in sight. How could every dream not come true on a romantic night like this? Sigh.

Your Fantasy Setting

My ultimate fantasy setting is the Greek island of Santorini. Where do you see your romantic dinner taking place?

I do love city lights so anywhere there are a lot of glittery lights is fine for me.

It's the person, not the place that matters most. I can appreciate what you have shared. Thank you.

It's All About True Intimacy

Most Romantic

What is the most romantic gift you have ever given or received for Valentine's Day?

  • genglo Feb 14, 2012 @ 7:16 pm | delete
Hand written love poems, the ever-popular mix tape, and my favorite was getting diamond earrings from my husband, delivered by my baby boy.
  • RenaissanceWoman2010 Feb 16, 2012 @ 7:42 am | delete
I sense a romantic soul in all of this. So glad you shared.

It wasn't a rooftop, but it was a dinner cooked entirely from scratch, just for me. Everything absolutely perfect. A dinner from scratch, wonderful conversation, a few nervous giggles ... and here we are 24 years later, still together.
  • RenaissanceWoman2010 Feb 3, 2012 @ 4:39 pm | delete
And here's to 24 more years of those kinds of special moments and gifts.

Romantic Lighting

It can be windy up on a roof, so you may need to get creative with the candles. Lanterns are a safe and beautiful option. For those considering a dining under moonlight theme — like my starry, starry night vision — consider creating mood lighting with luminaries. I love the metallic star candle holders featured below. Can't you just see how wondrous this flickering starlight would be? Imagine the beauty of creating a pathway to your designated dinner site with these luminaries.

These luminarias are perfect for romantic indoor or outdoor lighting. If you are dining outside, consider using battery operated tea lights. Your candlelight will not be affected by wind, plus you can reuse them over and over again. Why limit the romance to Valentine's Day?

Decorating Schemes

There are so many great options when it comes to decorating for a romantic candlelight dinner. My high desert cabin has one room with a mostly flat roof. If I were to choose a decorating theme for that location, I would go Southwestern. Think lots of richly colored pillows, a portable fireplace, and luminaries to line the border of the rooftop.

I'd love a few potted plants, like hibiscus, strung with mini lights. Imagine the delicious aroma of grilled fajitas served with margaritas. Wouldn't a nice flan make a lovely dessert? Spread out a sarape table cloth on the roof. No table or chairs needed. The comfy pillows make for a wonderfully intimate seating arrangement in front of the fire. Of course, we can't forget the Latin music (musica romantica). Ah... dulce vida — the sweet life.

Menu and Meal Considerations

Since this is my ultimate romantic rooftop date fantasy, I'm going for the gusto. In a perfect Valentine's Day world, there would be a hunky chef to prepare the rooftop meal. My choice? That would be Curtis Stone, the Aussie Take Home Chef. No doubt about that.

Of course, you can persuade a friend to help out, or do the cooking and serving yourself. It's always nice not to have to worry about anything except turning on the charm. Need some romantic menu ideas? Check out the links I have provided to help you come up with a Valentine's Day meal plan.

The Right Dessert

Turn Up the Heat

Choose your dessert carefully for a Valentine's Day candlelight dinner. A flambé is always spectacular with its flash of flame and heat. Always a nice finishing touch. Me? I'm going for the Banana's Foster. Take a look at the fiery options below. It's not as hard as you think to create a dessert that adds some fireworks to your special night.

Your Favorite Romantic Meal

What is your idea of a delicious, romantic meal?

  • Lifeboost Feb 16, 2012 @ 7:20 am | delete
A stick of French bread, a pot of cream cheese to dip chunks of it in, a container of salt to dip the dipped chunks in, and a bottle of red wine. Followed up with fresh cherries dipped in dark chocolate, and a little more red wine (chocolate and red wine are Devine together! :) ) Great lens! Blessed by a Squid Angel. :)

Anything that includes your sweetie's favorite foods.
  • Tipi Feb 7, 2012 @ 9:34 pm | delete
I think I'm going to follow Grace and her love and maybe they'll invite me to join them. I do enjoy crab and shrimp and plenty of butter.

Well, in the winter there is nothing like sitting around the fireplace with a pizza, wine and Boston Cream Pie for dessert. It's heaven!
  • RenaissanceWoman2010 Feb 4, 2012 @ 12:15 pm | delete
I'm still holding out for that Boston Cream pie. What time is dessert being served? ;-)

Music and Memories

In the movies, you might see musicians brought in to provide live music during the rooftop candlelight dinner. I prefer not to have a stranger present during a romantic date — well, except for Bon Jovi — but that's just me. No matter how you go about it, the right music is definitely important for setting the mood.

We were on a trip with my husbands company in Cancun, right on Valentines Day and they rented a disco for us all. It was really amazing, the mariachi band led us down the street to the disco, we had 3 mexican guys doing the Village people for us and near the end they dropped hundreds of red balloons and confetti. We had a great time.

Your Valentine's Day Plans

What do you have planned for Valentine's Day? Do you celebrate love on this date?

  • vallain Feb 16, 2012 @ 5:23 pm | delete
Sadly, after 22 years of marriage, we barely acknowledge Valentine's Day. If there's going to be a romantic dinner on a rooftop, I'd better plan it myself.
  • JoshK47 Feb 14, 2012 @ 11:40 am | delete
What a wonderful idea! I don't have anything specific planned, but this is a sweet date thought - blessed by a SquidAngel!
