Romantic Songs in Four Languages

Romance - In Four Languages

Love can be communicated through words and gestures, but also through music - regardless of the language. Together, the words and melody of a song communicate emotion and touch our hearts and souls. We often don't even need to understand the language to feel the emotion of a song - I'm sure we have all been touched by songs that we didn't have a clue what the lyrics actually meant.

There are beautiful love songs in all languages, but I have chosen to present songs in the four languages that I am most familiar with - English, French, Italian and Spanish. I have also only selected a few of my favorite singers - many more could have been included. Nevertheless, I hope you enjoy this music as much as I do.

Romantic Songs - English

These videos feature Engelbert Humperdinck, otherwise known as the KIng of Romance, performing "A Man Without Love", Al Martino singing "Spanish Eyes", "Sweet Sir Gallahad", written and performed by Joan Baez, "Sway", sung by none other than Dean Martin, and "When You Taught Me How To Dance", by Katie Melua. "Spanish Eyes" was also recorded by Engelbert Humperdinck in the late 60s and was a huge hit for him as well. Listen carefully to the melody of "A Man Without Love" as you will encounter it again in the section on Spanish songs, only this time sung by Andrea Bocelli.

Romantic Songs - Spanish

These videos feature Andrea Bocelli singing one of my favorite Spanish songs, "Besame Mucho", as well as "Cuando me enamoro". Other featured performances are "Eres Tu" by Mocedades, "Ojos de Espana", which is the Spanish version of "Spanish Eyes", sung by Anacani, and "El Reloj" sung by Luis Miguel.

If you listen to "Cuando me enamoro" you'll notice that the melody is the same as the melody used in the song "A Man Without Love", which was a hit for Engelbert Humperdinck in the late 60s.

Music & Language

Romantic Songs - French

These videos feature the following: a) Edith Piaf, one of France's greatest singers, performing "La vie en rose", b) Claude Francois singing "Comme d'habitude", c) Renee Martel, from Quebec, Canada, singing "Un amour qui ne veut pas mourir", and d) Edith Piaf singing "Je ne regrette rien".

"La vie en rose" is best translated as "life through rose-colored glasses", and "Comme d'habitude" translates to "As Usual". The melody for "Comme d'habitude" was used by Paul Anka to compose the song "My Way", which he also performed along with other great singers such as Frank Sinatra and Engelbert Humperdinck. Renee Martel wrote French lyrics for the song "Never Ending Love for You" to create "Un amour qui ne veut pas mourir". You have to admit that French songs have a certain "je ne sais quoi".

Music & Dance

Romantic Songs - Italian

It was difficult to choose which songs and performances to include in this section because I absolutely love Italian music, but in the end I chose the following: "Vivo per lei" and "Con te partiro", both performed by Andrea Bocelli, as well as "Volare" performed by Domenico Modugno, and "Arrivederci Roma", performed by Mario Lanza and Luisa di Meo in the movie "Seven Hills of Rome".

"Vivo per lei", which translates to "I live for her", was originally written about the love for a woman but Andrea Bocelli's interpretation of the song refers to "her" as music - a passion for music. Whichever way it is interpreted, this song has a lot of passion.
