Made to Order: A Romantic Winter Bedroom!

Turning a lackluster bedroom into dreamy, romantic, wintry retreat is a lot less challenging than you may think. Here are 8 easy steps to help you transform the mundane into the magnificent and all will adjust to any budget. With a little effort you'll be on your way to creating a winter haven that's beautiful, simple to put together and can be customized depending on your tastes.

As with most things though, romance is in the eye of the beholder and we don't all see through the same eyes. Creating anything means following your heart and your instincts. If you find it appealing then that's what matters. Well that, and the person you're trying romance, of course!

step oneFresh Walls

Start with a fresh coat of paint! For a romantic winter look go with the basic stark white walls. Wintry white makes everything bright, clean, fresh and well, it looks snowy. Whether you choose to paint or apply wallpaper or a do both, it's entirely up to you!

step twoSheer Fabric

A variety of semi-translucent fabrics like organza, chiffon, tissue lame, linen or tulle can be draped over the bed or gathered around the headboard to add romance and privacy. Also, consider running a matching piece of fabric through antique hoops or around a decorative rod just above a window or doorway to pull the room together.

step threeRomantic Lights

One easy way to creating romance is mood lighting. To create a romantic, wintry mood use an arrangement of lighted branches or small LED party lights or twinkle lights strung in a small tree, on a mantle or around a piece of furniture, window or mirror.

step fourFrosted Glass

The second way to foster a romantic mood also involves altering the lighting, but it in a much more subtle way: frosted glass. Beautiful ice crystals etched onto the glass isn't a year-round luxury for many people, so why not add your own? Frosted window film or spray-on frosted glass not only adds privacy, it doubles as a faux winter scene when you don't have one of your own.

step fiveCandles

So much about romance seems to hinge around the lighting, or lack thereof, but honestly candles are more than just about bringing down the level of light in a room. Not only can gorgeous candles add mystique and beauty to a room, but some candles come in wonderful scents that enhance romance in more ways than one. Be wary with burning candles in some cases, however. For instance, around things like miles of lightweight sheer fabrics (as I mention above) which are dreamy unless they're in flames. Also, if you're creating a romantic bedroom for two, make sure your significant other doesn't have any breathing issues, allergy problems or doesn't have an aversion to the smell of something like jasmine when you bring home a bag full of jasmine candles.

step sixFlowers or Flowering Plants

Fresh cut flowers or live flowering plants add a warm feel to any room as well as infuse beauty and fragrance into the space. Winter bulbs are fun to grow in special bulb vases and look gorgeous in front of frosted windows or near twinkling lights.

step sevenA Festive Touch

Display pine cones, holly, angels, snowmen, presents, trees, reindeer, or whatever you collect each holiday, to give a special magical touch to your romantic wintry bedroom. Small items can be easily rotated throughout the year to match different seasons without significantly altering the main decor and they won't blow the budget.

step eightTying It Together

A few well-placed ribbons can add a touch of romance to any room. Tie two different widths of overlapping ribbon around throw pillows to turn them into beautiful holiday packages and dress up your room for the season. Weave ribbon around candlesticks, trim lampshades or mirrors, mingle with fabric over windows, or over the bed, etc., but don't go overboard and remember to make sure to keep ribbons clear of any flames. The only thing cute about a fire are the firemen and that is NOT the recommended way to get them into your bedroom.
