Romantic Comedies That Don't Suck

It's true. It's difficult to find a decent romantic comedy. If there's ever been a genre filled with repetitive muck, it's this one. However, that doesn't mean that they all suck.

These are my picks for some romantic comedies that stand out from the rest. Some of these are borderline romantic comedies, so you may find yourself scratching your head at a few of my choices. However, I think you will at least find some good fodder for upcoming dates that won't make your brain want to shut down.

About a Boy

Many times people have asked, "What's so great about Hugh Grant?"

The answer is, when he wants to be, he can be quite the charmer. This film, however, is a bit different. Instead of beginning as a self-deprecating guy down on his luck in love, he plays, well, a jerk.

Yes, there is a kid. But there's also romance and it makes for an enjoyable film that will, um, lift your spirits. Yes. I almost choked on that one.

Clueless

Clueless is a modern day retelling of Jane Austen's Emma. And it's worthy of its predecessor. While some might find Cher a bit taxing, Alicia Silverstone plays it close to the cuff as the outlandish, pampered Beverly Hills high schooler who finds herself becoming the victim of her own romantic schemes.

Benny & Joon

Some might say this doesn't belong in this category. But it's Johnny Depp and it's romantic and we can't get over his portrayal of Sam. This is a love story about two people very unlikely to find love, yet do. It's funny, charming and is one of those films that, once you watch it, you'll be unable to turn the channel when you find it on television.

Love Actually

This is probably one of my all time favorites. With its sometimes hilarious and sometimes moving vignettes, there's a little something for everyone. It has just the right amount of sappy, but it doesn't go overboard. And with Bill Nighy in the cast as an over-the-hill rock star, you can't go wrong.

My Best Friend's Wedding

What's great about My Best Friend's Wedding is that it is bittersweet. It's a little too much like real life and that's why we like it. Plus, who can forget that great musical scene with Rupert Everett?

Pretty In Pink

I actually debated putting this one here because it edges a little too close to drama, but it is comedic and it is romantic, so I think that qualifies it. While it's not my favorite Hughes (scroll down to find that one), it's still a great one. Though, I think I speak for the majority when I say that Ande should always wind up with Duckie.

Pretty Woman

This one needs no introduction. It's a little trite. Very cliche, but it's still a lot of fun.

Say Anything

Again, this one is a bit too close to drama to qualify, but I still say it does. This is the film that made boomboxes cool. Sure it's a little dated, but it's still one awesome film with a fantastic cast. And Lloyd Dobler? Sigh.

Sense & Sensibility

Sense & Sensibility happens to be one of my favorite Austen tales. And with Emma Thompson, Alan Rickman, Kate Winslet and Hugh Grant, you can absolutely not go wrong.

I debated whether or not to put this one on here because I'm a little on the fence about it, but I still find it some unique and definitely funny.

Shakespeare In Love

Is it actually a romantic comedy? I don't know, but it certainly is one of the better "romantic" flicks out there. The story is unique, fun and definitely, definitely romantic.

Sixteen Candles

Probably one of my favorite films ever, Sixteen Candles is a perfect blend of comedy and romance. The tale of an overlooked high school girl who is in love with the cool jock is one we are all probably familiar with. However, this time, the underdog wins and we all can sleep a little bit better knowing that, at least in the movies, it did work out just once.

Sleepless in Seattle

The great thing about Sleepless in Seattle is that the two main characters spend the entire movie on separate sides of the country. It cuts down on the cutesy and allows the story to take front and center. With some great comedic performances, this is one of the greatest.

The Philadelphia Story

An oldie, but a goodie, The Philadelphia Story features perhaps three of Hollywood's greatest talents of all time: Jimmy Stewart, Cary Grant and Katherine Hepburn. It's a fun little story that stays as entertaining as the day it debuted (though, I can't say I quite remember that day ;) ).

The Wedding Singer

The story of a Wedding Singer who seemingly fails at his own nuptials is fun, sweet and one of my favorites. The soundtrack, full of old 80s favorites, is also killer.

While You Were Sleeping

I love this one! It's a unique concept, but most of all, it's just hilarious! The supporting cast in this film is what really makes it shine. Featuring the late Peter Boyle, this film is just full of win.

Working Girl

Okay, so perhaps this is more of an underdog tale than a romantic comedy, but there is romance. Featuring none other than Indiana Jones and Han Solo himself, Harrison Ford. With Sigourney Weaver in the role of the "villain," this one is just a lot of fun. And its sweeping shot of pre-911 NYC is absolutely one of my favorite shots ever.
