Italy's capital city is Rome. It is also the most populous and largest city in Italy with over 2.8 million people. After Milan, Rome has the second largest metropolitan area in Italy. Rome can be found on the Italian peninsula in the central-western portion.
The Episcopal seat is head by the popes with Rome and the Catholic Church being indentified together. An enclave of Rome is The state of the Vatican City which has the honour of being the smallest nation in the world.
Rome today is a cosmopolitan city that is wonderfully modern. It actually came through World War II pretty much unscathed unlike most other European cities. Therefore the center of Rome remains essentially Baroque and Renaissance in character. UNESCO as listed the Historic Centre of Rome as a World Heritage Site.
