Trevi Fountain

Trevi FountainThe Trevi Fountain is located in Trevi rione in Rome, Italy. This fountain is at the end of an aqueduct constructed in 19 BC, the Aqua Virgo, which brings water from the Salone Springs approximately 20km outside of Rome. The Trevi Fountain is the largest Baroque fountain in the city.

Neptune, the god of the sea, is the central figure of the Trevi Fountain; he rides a chariot in the shape of a shell that is pulled by two sea horses. The sea horses symbolize the fluctuating moods of the sea; one is resistant, the other calm and obedient.

The Trevi Fountain is one of the most visited fountains in Rome; visitors and tourists often view the fountain at night to experience its charm while drinking a toast to their return to the city and throw a coin or two into the fountain. According to legend, you will return to the city of Rome if you throw a coin, over your shoulder facing away from the fountain, into the water.

Porter Fountain

Porter Water FountainThe Porter Fountain or the 'Fountain of the Porter' is also known as the 'Facchino Fountain.' This famous fountain represents a water-seller in his porter's uniform; according to some, it is dedicated to wine carriers. It is a well-known human sculpture water fountain and one of the more famous 'talking statues.' Talking statues are the way in which Rome has opposed - though with humor - the corruption and arrogance of the ruling class. It is seen as a joke, poem or political satire against the pope.

The statue was moved in 1874 to the Via Lata, but was originally located on the façade of the Palazzo De Carolis in via del Corso not far from piazza Venezia..

Four Rivers Fountain

Four Rivers FountainThe Four Rivers Fountain, otherwise known as the Fontana del Quattro Flumi is a decorative fountain is located in the center of the oval Piazza Navona and is representative of the impressive effects sought by artists of the Baroque period.

The Four Rivers Fountain, erected in 1651 just outside the church of Sant'Agnese in Agone belonged to its patron, Innocent X (1644 - 1655). Among several reasons, its making was opposed by the people of Rome because Innocent X built it at the expense of the public during the famine of 1646 - 1648

The fountain commemorates the Pope's redirection of the Acqua Vergine, an ancient Roman aqueduct that supplied much of the water to the front of his family palace, the Palazzo Pamphili.

Four large figures symbolizing the four great rivers of the then-known continents are set on the rocks of the Four Rivers Fountain; sculpted rock forms the base of this amazingly beautiful fountain.
