Going to Rome and don't know where to stay?
A few years ago my wife and I decided to visit Rome.
This being the internet age we did all sorts of research on the travel sites. Eventually I compiled a short list of hotels we wanted to price shop...when we got some GREAT advice from a friend.
You're surely aware ANYONE can say anything they want about themselves on the internet, and this friend explained that HE had done exactly the same thing before visiting.
Lots of web research, looking at photos & virtual tours, asking around, etc.
Eventually they decided on a hotel and were shocked to discover it was a DUMP!
Learning from his mistakes I became deeply involved in my research and eventually found tripadvisor.com (I'm not affiliated in any way). This site features reviews from people who actually stayed at these places. Holy cow - what people were saying about some of my short-listed hotels!
We dodged a bullet - we almost stayed in a flop house.

Italian in Ten Days (Pimsleur)
In a week of listening to this CD set in the car, my wife and I got to be quite fluent with the basics of conversational Italian. Between this course and the submersion into the culture, by the end of the week we could (proudly) dine without speaking a word of English.
Oh and by the way, everybody there speaks English anyway but appreciate that you at least try.
I've used this program and it works.
Harper Collins Italian Pocket Dictionary
Small enough to fit into a pocket of cargo pants or shorts, this little book is a lifesaver. Easy to use and darned comprehensive for the traveler.
