The exhibition, Ron Mueck at The Andy Warhol features sevenof the artist's realistic human sculptures including: In Bed (2005) a giant sculpture of a woman lying in bed; A Girl (2006), a vast sculpture of a newborn baby; Wild Man (2005), a nine-foot sculpture of a naked, bearded man; Spooning Couple (2005), a miniature sculpture of a couple lying together on a bed; Man in a Boat (2002) a naked man sitting in a life-size wooden rowing boat; Ron Mueck's self-portrait, Mask II (2001-2002); and Mask III (2005), a large portrait of a black woman.

Most memorable statement: "To get bogged down in a debate over naturalism, realism, and illusionism when trying to sort out the hows and whys of Mueck's oeuvre is to miss the point. More interesting is a discussion of his standing in the history of figuration. A certain freshness and sincerity of vision distinguish him from the blasé irony of many of his contemporaries who also explore strategies of realism. Above all, Mueck is a master at orchestrating tensions that both attract and estrange. His figures invite close-up inspection of blemishes, hairs, veins, and expression, taking you on a psycho-topographical journey. If you stare long and deeply enough, you experience a horrific beauty. Yet the very same verisimilitude creates a weird distance that is as equally penetrating of our current existential state."

Ron Mueck - The Making of The Pregnant Woman

Set aside 30 minutes to watch this great documentary. A nice overview of his work and detailed description of the meticulous process of creating his hyper-realistic sculptures. This video highlights the making of The Pregnant Woman. The video was filmed during Ron Mueck's residency at The National Gallery, London, in 2002.
