Do the Right Thing

I would say that because of these two points alone that Ron the man should be in.

First, he was a better hitter than a number of Hall of Fame third basemen, including Pie Traynor, Jimmy Collins and Brooks Robinson.

Secondly, He was a fine defensive player as well. Who won five Gold Gloves.

Yet he continues to be passed over. I say this to the Veterans Committee, "Do the right thing, elect Ron Santo into the HOF!"

Ron Santo for HOF

A Golden Career

Ronald Edward Santo

February 25 1940

Born February 25th, 1940 in Seattle, Washington. He made his Chicago Cub debut on June 26, 1960. His 15 seasons spent mainly with the Cubs, until 1973, then finishing out with the Chicago White Sox in 1974. We'll forgive him for crossing over. The man loved to play, what can I say?

In his famed career he was named a National League All-Star 9 times during his 15 seasons of play (1960 - 1974), and won five consecutive Gold Glove awards for fielding excellence (1964-1968).

In 2005, he came within eight votes of election to the Baseball Hall of Fame by the Veterans Committee, and in 2007 he came within five votes. Bill James, a notable statistical guru, feels Santo's elevation to the Hall of Fame is long overdue. Santo's next opportunity for admission will come in 2009.

Long overdue is putting it mildly. So I ask you, "Why isn't he already in the Hall of Fame?" Each time he gets closer, and closer. No excuses in 2009!

Some believe, including my Husband that he may have alienated a few Mets with his famous heel click. So these old boys who are on the Veterans Committee, aren't looking at the stats? No they're holding a silly grudge! Give me a break. Boys, ya sound like a bunch of two year olds.

Reminds me of a quote from Ron,

"There are a lot of guys who are respected but not liked."

You don't have to like him, respect his ability as an outstanding player!

Tim says:

A long time ago. This is huge glaring hole in the HOF. It makes me question the way they do things.

ThomasC says:

I don't know anything about him, but if he accomplished all these things, he should be voted in.

ThomasC says:

I have no idea who he is, and I am not a baseball fan, but if he has accomplised everything you listed, then I think he should be voted into the HOF.

chloecavanaugh says:

He should have been in a long time ago!

Absolutely not!

"Santo has been endorsing the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation's annual Ron Santo Walk to Cure Diabetes in Chicago since 1974, and has raised over $50 million for the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF). In 2002, Santo was named the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation's "Person of the Year." Santo also inspired Bill Holden to walk 2,100 miles, from Arizona to Chicago, to raise $250,000 for diabetes research."

Broadcast Career

"Ron Santo joined the Cubs' broadcast booth in 1990 as the WGN color commentator.

In Chicago, Santo is known for his unabashed broadcast enthusiasm, which he reveals with groans and cheers during the game. As excitable as Santo is when a great play for the Cubs occurs, he is equally as vocal in his displeasure, as is evidenced by his reaction in 1998 when Brant Brown, who was playing left field, dropped a fly ball against Milwaukee during the team's successful run for the Wild Card. Ron also has been known to engage in discussions about his variety of toupees."
