Bon Scott - Legendary Wild Man

Ranked #1,700 in Music, #46,699 overall

Rock. In. Peace. Ronald Belford (Bon) Scott

Bon Scott in my opinion is one of the greatest Hard Rock singers ever to grace the stage. He had the attitude, charisma, energy and sense of fun to control and hold an audience both in live gigs and on record.

Bon was born Ronald Belford Scott in 1946 in Scotland, but soon moved to Australia with his family.
It was there that he was introduced to music and after many years in several bands, finally joined a young Sydney band called AC/DC.

It was as the lead singer for AC/DC that Bon is best known and loved, but unfortunately his hard partying lifestyle caught up with him 6 years after joining the band in 1980. He will always live on though in the hearts of fans and is still considered by many AC/DC fans as the best singer the band had. R.I.P. Bon!

Bon Scott's Bands before AC/DC

After settling as a child in Australia, Bon first became interested in music playing drums in the Fremantle Scots Pipe Band alongside his father. His drumming and singing led him to his first band, "The Spektors" in 1964. He was primarily the drummer in this band but did do some singing.

Two years later Bon was starting to get more serious about his music and then The Spektors merged with another local band to form "The Valentines". It was with this band that stardom started happening for Bon after they scored a number of charting hits.

The Valentines broke up in 1970 though, so Bon went off and joined "Fraternity". This move escalated Bon's fame as Fraternity went on to record two albums and tour extensively in Australia, supporting the likes of Black Sabbath, Deep Purple, Manfred Mann, Free and even Jerry Lee Lewis! Fraternity even toured the United Kingdom where they supported Status Quo and Geordie, who's lead singer Brian Johnson would ironically replace Bon in AC/DC many years later.

Fraternity split up in 1974 and Bon went back to a regular job for a short while in Adelaide, but he did play around for a little while with a local band called "The Mount Lofty Rangers" before being offered the job as lead singer for AC/DC. Their original singer Dave Evans was not working out and they had heard of Bon through Vince Lovegrove , formerly of The Valentines. Bon accepted and the rest is history!

It's Along Way To The Top

If You Want To Rock N Roll

This is my favourite AC/DC film clip as it was filmed in Melbourne, Australia, which is where I grew up. I remember in the early 1980's seeing this for the first time and being amazed at how much the street had changed in the years since it was filmed. Of course now, nearly 40 years after it was filmed, the street looks almost nothing like it did then. This is a great concept for a film clip. Very simple by today's standards, but still a very interesting film clip to watch. Especially the looks on peoples faces in the street.

How much do you know about the legendary Bon?

AC/DC Featuring Dave Evans On Vocals

Before Bon Scott Joined The Band.

This is a video that I saw on Rage (Aussie late night music TV show) in the late 80's. I was glad to find it again more than 20 years later on YouTube! It is fascinating to see the band as the Glam Rock outfit that they were initially. Check out what Malcolm Young is wearing!

Death Of A Legend

Sadly, Bon Scott's party came to an end in London on February 19th, 1980. Just when the band had reached super-stardom and Bon thought that he had finally made it, life came to an end for him. Bon was found dead in a car belonging to an acquaintance named Alistair Kinnear. Alistair had ben partying with Bon the night before and upon arival at his home, could not get the Drunk Bon out of the car and into the house. So he left him there to sleep it off in the car. He then went to bed himself and late the next day found Bon still in the car....dead!

Pulmonary aspiration of vomit (he choked on his vomit) was the cause of Bon's death and the official cause was listed as "acute alcohol poisoning" and "death by misadventure". Bon Scott's body was flown back to Australia and cremated and his ashes were interred by his family in Fremantle, Western Australia.

If Bon had lived........

Would he still be the legend that he is today?

Or do you think that he would have been just another old rocker?

Loading

Bon would have carried on as a legend regardless.

kiwisoutback says:

I think Angus and Maclom still had those Back in Black riffs in them, and they would've recorded a similar album with Bon Scott. I love Brian Johnson, but imagining how good those songs would have been with Bon Scott -- it would've been incredible.

heehaw says:

his name will always go skyhigh

Bon would have faded away and AC/DC would not have been the success that they are today.

Thanks for the blessing. Much appreciated. I have seen AC/DC twice, in 1992 and 1996. Both times were awesome, but I would have loved to have been around to see them with Bon.
