How to Be a Good Roomie

Dorm rooms and apartments are cramped for space. Sometimes you may wonder how even one person can live in them, let alone two or three. So, if your sharing that same are with someone for a semester or two you are going to need to learn how to live civily with a stanger who will one day become a life long friend.

This lens is about how to be a good and respectful roommate. We have all heard our share of bad roommate stories. Some of us are the good roomies, some of us are the bad. Some maybe even the ugly. So, lets go over the basics of being a good roomie.

Don't be a slob!

type=textSure, you may not be a neat freak, but don't leave your underoos everywhere. Your roommate may also be a tad messy, but I'm sure they don't want to know if you wear boxers, breifs, or thongs, or granny panties.This can be frustrating to deal with. Organization is key in not being a slob. Because mixing up your undies with your roommates is even worse then leaving them around. Organization doesn't mean that you have to feather dust every day. It just means keep your stuff away from my stuff.

Rules of Sharing

type=textLet's face it! Roommates share a lot. They share living space, maybe even classes and clothes. It is still important to respect boundries when sharing. Compromise is a big part of it. If your roommate needs to study and you want to through the party of the century. Tough luck! Plan together and work it out.

Also, this is a big one for the ladies, ASK BEFORE USING YOUR ROOMMATES CLOTHES! If you are the same size as your roomie and want to wear the super cute skirt they just got from DKNY and they aren't around, ask first! send a text.

Things you should NOT share with your roomie

Boyfriends and Girlfriends! - this can complicate things to the point of no return!

Don't "Sexile" your Roommate

type=textJust don't do it!

If you want to put a sock on the door, do it on your own time. Don't leave your roommate out in the hallway with their laptop youtubing funny cat videos.

Join Activities with Your Roommate

type=textGo to a football game with them, or join a club together. You don't have to spend every waking moment, but you should try to find common ground and build on it. And, if you don't find anything in common with your roommate be supportive of there activities. If they are in a band you should go to their concert if you can. Even if you don't like the kind of musice it is still nice to go because they will then do the same for you.

Rooming with Close Friends can Ruin a Friendship

type=textIt can be hard accepting that you may be rooming with a stranger. We hold our friends close, but it can be a big mistake living with them. I mean, I wouldn't want my friends knowing that I sing show tunes in the shower or watch me do squat thrusts will I brain storm topics for my research paper. You may also find yourselves spending too much time together. This is normal, but if communication between you isn't good it can put a dent in the friendship.

    Some friends you can be best of friends but never want to live with them! Mutual respect for each other and living space is the most important sometimes in a dorm.

    I have had good and bad roomates, but I like the creativity that pours out of writing this "underoos" priceless things you should not share yeah, expected that, but didn't it to be the only one :) Which definitely made it funnier, nice job.
