Introduction

July 15 - 20, 2008

World Youth Day 2008 and the week preceding it were pretty special because it marked the first visit of Pope Benedict XVI to Australia and World Youth Day is claimed to be the largest youth event in the world.

Online photos with us in it

From our interview with the ebenedict.org team

When our family literally crossed the bridge, the Sydney Harbour Bridge, we then had to face the rest of the walk to Randwick Racecourse. So the first thing we did was stop at Darling Harbour for a break and a rest.

Once we made up our mind to continue walking, a gentleman from the crowd recognised the World Youth Day 2000 T-shirt Caronne was wearing and thought we may have an interesting story, so he asked us if we would mind being interviewed.

Well what could we say...Here are the photos they took. Maybe the interview will be published too, one day...
Caronne and I
This is us after we finished walking across the Sydney Harbour Bridge. As you can see, we weren't expecting to be interviewed or photographed.
Preparing for a group shot
This photo shows Rosemary's initial reaction to getting our photo taken. This is an example of what happens when children are tired after a big walk and are asked to perform on the spot.
Settling in for the family photo
At least having Rosemary and Stephanie in the photo helps people to not look at what we are wearing.
Family photo 1
This World Youth Day provides a wonderful change from the World Youth Day in 2000. Caronne and I had married since in 2002 and we now have two wonderful girls.
Family photo 2
This photo nearly looks the same as before but we have moved slightly.
The family photo
We think this photo is pretty good.

Our first glimpse of the World Youth Day action

Opening day 15 July 2008

Today we saw the Opening Mass on the SBS television station. It was amazing to see the 1000's of people in one spot. The homily by Cardinal Pell was encouraging.

Keep up to date with the video feeds with the Official WYD08 Media Player

My family and I plan to get to Sydney on Friday, but, it is possible we may go up Thursday with all the excitement.

The tentative itinerary that we have is:
    Friday: Visit St. Mary's Cathedral
Saturday: Walk across the Harbour Bridge, enter the Randwick Racecourse, watch the Youth Festival watch the vigil cereminies and sleep overnight
Sunday: Wake up to Mass, watch more of the Youth Festival and then return to our accommodation

Would you like to know more about living in Australia?

My first encounter

Australia, Israel and Rome

I went to World Youth Day 2000 without a clue of what would happen and the journey took me through the Holy Lands and Rome.

When I got home, I had my prayers answered. To marry and start a family, to get promoted and to balance work and family life.

Eight years later, providence, is still helping me and my family find balance. I've started a business in the hope of helping people be fulfilled by choosing purposeful work. Helping our community was a message I took from the 2000 World Youth Day and am actively trying to integrate this message as part of my life.

This World Youth Day pilgrimage is my second and I wonder what will happen in the next 8 years!!!

If there is any way you can join us for this special time in Australia, then come and join us. You will be amazed what the Holy Spirit will help you accomplish.

I love Feedback

Very inspiring. The Youth is so important to our future. We are told they are getting more selfish, but that isn't true and its great to be reminded.

Kids from my church have also gone to this in different countries. These and things like Heifer camps make a difference.
