Rootball. What It Is.

Never heard of Rootball? Well I hadn't either until I moved to Asheville, North Carolina. There is a place in east Asheville called Root Bar #1. This is where you play Rootball. A classic bar that is truly a sports bar. Three Rootball courts out back and plenty of friendly people to show you how to play.

Rootball uses three components: a Root (an oval plastic ring), a Ball, and 2 Stakes, one at each end of the court. In a nutshell, the object is to hit the Stake with the Root (a ringer is terrific) and then make contact with the Root and/or the Stake with the Ball. A match is played to 12 points.

My First Rootball Victory!

So the four of us grab some beers and head out to the courts. Great Asheville summer night. We grab a Root and a Ball and split into teams. Each one of us takes turns throwing the Root, the other team member throwing the Ball. Next time we switch who throws what. All of this is done of course in between beer runs to the bar inside. We had plenty of people telling us how to score our throws and in the end, we prevailed! By 1 point, but a win no less.

I find your skill at Rootball and the fun playing it is in direct correlation with the numbers of beers consumed.
