Who Is Rorschach

Walter Joseph Kovacs, aka "Rorschach" (that's pronounced "roar-shack"), is a twisted protagonist in Alan Moore's epic graphic novel, "Watchmen," which had a movie adaptation in early March 2009. Part vigilante and part sadist, he's a violent streetwalker who shows no mercy to criminals.

Since childhood, Rorschach has been unpredictable and morally aware of right and wrong. Coveted by his amorphous mask, his anonymous appearance adds a huge amount of mystery and fear to his persona.

Rorschach: Beneath the Mask

Regardless if you've read the graphic novel "Watchmen," saw the movie (or hopefully both), Rorschach was undoubtedly a character you'll never forget. Stemming from a rough childhood in a hostile home, he learned to let his anger loose on anyone who crossed him. As a continuing member of the ex-costumed vigilantes, Rorschach acted like a private eye - acting on clues and torturing or killing the perpetrator [for instance, the child murderer who received execution via meat cleaver to the skull].

He's mysterious and talks in a low, monotone voice, in incomplete 'snippets' as sentences. Keeping a journal of his activities, Rorschach is an apathetic friend of Nite Owl; angry for having "given up" the vigilante life. With unreal strength and reflexes, Rorschach is an incredible fighter and is quick to overcome nearly anyone in close range combat -- except for Ozymandias. Beyond being adept at melee, he's able to wield inane objects as weapons, making him an extreme threat to criminals and police alike.

Rorschach's wardrobe is reminiscent of the 1940s: brown pinstripe pants, a half trenchcoat covering a thick scarf, and a derby. He's often seen with his hands in his pockets - even after an intense fight.

Rorschach's Mask

Rorschach's mask resembles a plain white cloth with a pattern of an inkblot test; a psychological evaluation procedure where a patient is asked to observe a blot of ink and describe what they see, originally devised by famous psychoanalyst Hermann Rorschach.

In both the graphic novel and movie, Rorschach's mask is amorphous...that is, the ink blot shifts and changes constantly, presumably reflecting Rorschach's emotions at the time. He refers to the mask as his "true face," and is rarely seen without it - unless in captivity. He successfully wears the mask throughout his daily routine without suffering from lack of vision of any kind.
