My Experience with Rosacea - Rosacea Treatment

Ranked #7,712 in Healthy Living, #130,875 overall

Do you have acne rosacea? If so, there's hope!

I first suspected that I had acne rosacea when I was 16 or so. I know, it isn't typical to get it so young but pretty much every woman on my mom's side of the family has it so... it makes sense. :)

I thought I'd put together a lens talking about my experiences with Rosacea and what I do to deal with it. It never quite goes away - but when my skin is healthy, the Rosacea actually gives it a healthy glow. I want the same for you!

Rosacea - My Story and Experiences

Basic Strategies for Treating Rosacea

When I was 19 I finally saw a dermatologist for the right diagnosis of my rosacea. He confirmed that I had it and gave me some things to use. One of the things was Retin-A which burned my skin. I threw it in the garbage and looked for other options. Clearly that topical treatment was having the opposite affect on my skin.

Since that time I've hard flareups here and there. I'm 32 and my skin looks great! Most people say that the Rosacea just gives my skin a nice healthy glow. I use a rosacea treatment schedule that is as natural as possible. I take care to eat right, drink beneficial teas, and use products that will help calm the redness. I thought I'd share my experiences on what I do to take care of it.

Finding the Right Skincare for Rosacea is Key

What's right for you? I've tried nearly everything I could get my hands on and I know that the simplest treatment is often best. I often use the Clarins line, but that changes all the time. It is important to try different things to find what is best for you.

Foods to Eat for Rosacea

A Good Rosacea Diet

People with Rosacea should pay extra special attention to their diet. I notice that when I eat crap, my skin looks like crap!
  • Drink plenty of water. Dehydration really shows on the skin. The skin starts to flake which seems to irritate the Rosacea. Drink enough water!
  • Eat a healthy diet. We all know that eating healthy is good for us. We know what we need to do - plenty of fruits and veggies, healthy fats, whole grains, and plenty of protein are building blocks for healthy skin and a healthy life. I know this is something I need to work on!
  • Hot and cold food... Ever drink coffee and have someone tell you that you're face was red? Well this is a trigger for sure. If you insist on eating hot, spicy, or cold foods just apply some rosewater on your skin after to calm down the capillaries.

Rosacea Natural Remedy - Herbal Remedies for Rosacea

I'm an herbalist so naturally I turn to the plant world when I have a health problem. Rosacea is no exception. Here are some other things I use to help manage my skin condition.
  • Aloe vera gel. I keep this on hand and apply it to my skin to calm any stubborn flareups.
  • Lavender essential oil. If the flareup is really bad, I'll mix a drop of lavender EO with 1 tablespoon of aloe and apply it to my skin. Try it! I learned this when I went through my Master Herbalist program at Australasian College of Health Sciences.
  • Burdock tea. When my skin starts feeling irritated, I'll drink a few cups of Burdock tea and it seems to calm it down.

Try Using Mineral Makeup for Rosacea

Rosacea Makeup

Makeup can be very irritating if it is made with synthetic ingredients. Mineral makeup on the other hand is very soothing to the skin. It can actually help calm down the Rosacea! If you do decide to use mineral makeup, however, understand that it might make your skin feel a little dry. To help protect your skin, use the Clarins Lotus Oil I mentioned above. Apply it underneath the makeup after your moisturizer and underneath your makeup.

Brenda, that's about all I do, too. I find that eating a healthy diet, drinking plenty of water, and choosing gentle and nourishing products are the three best things. :)
