Roses

I am almost ashame to admit this, but roses are not my favorite flower. However, I have found like many other kinds of flowers and things in Nature, I love to photography them.

Recently, I got a Nikon D3100 camera and I am trying hard to learn how to use it. It is not like my Fuji S1000 which was just a regular digital camera point and shoot. The Nikon is a much more advanced camera and I will admit at first did not like using it. The first time I took the camera out shooting, I took close to a 100 picture and only a hand full came out. I was so disappointed that I was tempted to return the camera and stick to using my Fuji. BUT that challenger part of me said, "NO WAY are you giving up!" So I practiced shooting pictures and just yesterday felt it was time to start using my larger lens.

The picture in this module is what broke the ice for me. When I seen how it came out, I figured okay I think I am getting the hang of working with this smaller lens, let's see what I can do with the big one. So out of (who knows how many picture I have shot) I can honestly say I need a lot of work! BUT I am not giving up because just like learning how to use my smaller lens, it takes a lot of practice!

I am going to share some of my macro photography of roses on this page. I have them displayed at WhiteOak's Photography and a couple at FineArt. Macro Photography is just another way saying taking close up shots of things; in this case Roses.

One of the most tragic things I know about human nature is that all of us tend to put off living. We are all dreaming of some magical rose garden over the horizon-instead of enjoying the roses blooming outside our windows today.

Love planted a rose.

Rose Petal Jam (I KNOW a bit off topic or is it?)

I purposely did not use the recipe module, perhaps I'll change that later.

I first tasted this wonderful jam a few years back when I bartered with this lady who was a fair I was displayed in. She grew and made the most wonderful Rose Jam. I had never tasted it before so I was real excited to do this trade. Here is a recipe I found and yes, I plan on making it with roses from my yard.

Rose Petal Jam

For this recipe, please only use roses you have grown and have NOT used pesticides on. You will need:

3 cups of fresh rose petals
3 cups of distilled water
3 cups of sugar
4 tablespoons of honey
3 tablespoons of fresh lemon juice

Wash and drain the rose petals really good. Be sure to not get any of the white base of the rose mixed with the petals because it is really bitter. Usually, you can hold the stem of the rose and pull the petals directly off of the head with little effort.

Place the water and petals into a pot and cook for approximately 10 minutes, strain out the water but keep it and set it aside.

Place sugar and honey in the pot and cook about 20 minutes or until it looks syrupy; be sure to skim off the foam because it will make the jam look cloudy and with this beautiful jam, you do not want anything to take away from its beauty.

After the sugar/honey mixture is done, add the rose pets and cook for another 20 minutes or so. Add lemon juice and simmer until it sets, about another 15 minutes. Your syrup mixture needs to reach 220-222 degrees. An easy test is to place some of the syrup mixture on a spoonful to see if it coats the surface of the spoon or runs off. If the mixture runs off of the spoon continue to cook another 5 minutes or so and retest it.

Get your jars, rims and caps ready and when the rose jam is done, ladle it into the jars leaving ¼ inch from top. Be sure the rims are clean and free of any jam that may have spilled on them.

This jam is best when it has a chance to settle. Remember Rose Jam is not like other jams, it is an elegant treat and once you try it I promise it will become one of your favorite breakfast items!! Ever thought about trying it as a glaze for Chicken????

Great recipe! roses are not my favorite either. there are far more beautiful flowers, BUT!!!!! I have seen roses withstand and sometimes bloom in harsh cold weather. That in itself is beautiful.

How exciting...to get a new camera! Beautiful rose photos. Even though you have been frustrated learning about your new camera I sense your determination to move onward and upward to getting that perfect shot.
