Facts about Roses

Roses are on of the most popular flowers. In fact, the rose is the official National Floral emblem of the United States. This legislation was signed into law by President Ronald Reagan on October 7, 1986 in a ceremony in the White House Rose Garden.
Other countries also have the rose as their national emblem: Bulgaria, Cypress, Czech Republic, Ecuador, Iran, Iraq, Luxemburg, Maldives, Romania, Slovenia and England.

Roses in Poetry
An Inspiration to Poets
I Watched a RosebudChristina Rosetti (1830-1894)
I watched a rosebud very long
Brought on by dew and sun and shower,
Waiting to see the perfect flower:
Then, when I thought it should be strong,
It opened at the matin hour
And fell at even-song.
I watched a nest from day to day,
A green nest full of pleasant shade,
Wherein three speckled eggs were laid:
But when they should have hatched in May,
The two old birds had grown afraid
Or tired, and flew away.
Then in my wrath I broke the bough
That I had tended so with care,
Hoping its scent should fill the air;
I crushed the eggs, not heeding how
Their ancient promise had been fair:
I would have vengeance now.
But the dead branch spoke from the sod,
And the eggs answered me again:
Because we failed dost thou complain?
Is thy wrath just? And what if God,
Who waiteth for thy fruits in vain,
Should also take the rod?
Yes, and the heart doth owe thee
More love, dead rose! than to such roses bold
As Julia wears at dances, smiling cold!---
Lie still upon this heart---which breaks below thee!

My Love is Like a Red, Red RoseBy Robert Burns (1759 - 1796)
0, my love is like a red, red rose,
that's newly sprung in June.
0, my love is like a melody,
that's sweetly play'd in tune.
As fair thou art, my bonnie lass,
so deep in love am I,
And I will love thee still, my dear,
till a' the seas gang dry.
Till a' the seas gang dry, my dear,
and the rocks melt wi' the sun!
And I will love thee still, my dear,
while the sands of life shall run.
And fare the weel, my only love!
And fare the well awhile!
And I will come again, my love.
Tho it were ten thousand mile!

My Pretty Rose TreeWilliam Blake (1757 - 1827)
A flower was offered to me,
Such a flower as May never bore;
But I said "I've a pretty rose tree,"
And I passed the sweet flower o'er.
Then I went to my pretty rose tree,
To tend her by day and by night;
But my rose turned away with jealousy,
And her thorns were my only delight.

Tips on Caring for Cut Roses
If you are lucky enough to receive roses, here are some tips on how to take care of them:- Always use a very clean vase and use fresh, lukewarm water. This will prevent bacteria from ruining the flowers.
- Add commercial cut flower food to the water.
- Strip all the leaves below the water level. Leaves that are submerged will rot.
- Take at least 1 to 2 inch off the stems, making a 45 degree cut with a sharp knife or sissors.
- Make sure your bouquet has room to move around the mouth of a vase; flowers won't keep well if they're too crowded.
- Keep your flowers away from direct sunlight, heat and drafts.
- Change the water and flower food every three to four days and recut the stems at the same time. Always add warm water, not cold to the vase. It is very important to change the water completely. Do not just keep adding more water to the already existing water.
- Remove dying flowers and foliage as they occur.

Roses in My Work
Roses Have Inspired Both my Paintings and Designs
I have also been inspired by roses in both my paintings and my designs. This painting, Cascading Roses, for sale on The Untapped Source as fine art prints, was inspired by a garden just down the street from my home. It was most beautiful this one particular time. This display of roses was never quite as beautiful again.
I also have a shop at CafePress where I use flowers to create my designs on my t-shirts and various gifts. Below is a small sample of the products that have my rose designs. You can look at other products with rose designs on my Roses page.
