I am a photographor using a photo-editor who is having a hard time differentiating my position. How do I put a price on my services if I am charging for time
  • Stinky Feb 10, 2010 @ 12:33 pm | delete
    Hi Jennifer,
That is a complicated question. A photo is worth only what someone is willing to pay for it, so pricing your work is tricky. If you are charging by the hour for photo shoots (ads, weddings, etc.), you can evaluate others in your area doing the same kind and quality of work you do, then set your hourly rate accordingly. If you are selling individual prints of your work, pricing depends on many factors. You may be in the right place at the right time and capture something that will bring a fantastic price. Or you may have a selection of photos that are eye-catching, unusual, beautifully composed and create a photo website to showcase your work. Price the photos by size, matted, framed, etc. after doing your research of other artist sites with comparable work. There are many options and pricing varies considerably. Good luck with your photography and let us know when and where you put your work up for sale.

If you have a library of photos that are good but not the 'cream' of your work, you may decide to go to some of the photo reselling sites like iStockphoto, Dreamstime, Alamy etc. You don't make a lot per photo, but it might be a solution for the bulk of your good quality photos. These sites list the subjects of photos they are looking for and they work with amateur to professional photographers.
