Rose Gardening Basics
Contrary to public opinion, Roses aren't some over bred species of plants that need constant pampering to survive. Most rose species have some basic requirements - adequate sunlight, water and nutrition - to provide a splashy show of color in your garden.
Roses prefer a well-drained soil high in organic matter - that means adding composted material, soil additives and/or fertilizer to the bed before the roses are planted. Roses also prefer a neutral soil, with a pH factor of between 5.5 and 7.0 - meaning the soil is neither highly acidic or alkaline. Add a layer of bone meal to the bottom of the planting hole prior to planting the rose.
To determine if the location you have chosen for your rose has adequate drainage, first dig the hole where the plant will go, and fill it approximately ¾ deep with water. If the water drains or is absorbed within 6-8 hours, you have adequate drainage. If you still see standing water after that period of time, you'll need to expand the hole, and add more organic material and soil additives to help wick the water away from the roots. Roses cannot survive for long in standing water, so drainage is critical.
Once the rose has been planted, it's a good idea to add a two-inch layer of mulching material around the base of the plant. Mulch serves several purposes - adding additional organic material to the site, helping to control weed growth, and stabilizes soil temperature.
