Shabby Chic Roses or Cottage Roses

Roses in home decor are often used in fabrics, prints, and on china and decorative accents, especially in Victorian, Romantic, Shabby Chic and Cottage decorative styles.

Shabby Chic or Cottage decor often features white furniture that has been distressed by lightly sanding the edges and corners to give a worn appearance. Vintage pieces of furniture found in antique shops and at garage sales add to the look, as are slipcoveres which are a common feature. In the bedroom and bath, fabrics with rose designs are usually used.

Roses can be seen on china pieces and are also painted on wood accent pieces throughout the home. Baskets of roses add a nice touch to complete the theme.

What is Shabby Chic

Shabby chic items are often heavily painted with many layers showing through obviously worn areas. The style is imitated in Faux Painting using glaze or by painting then rubbing and sanding away the top coat to show the wood or base coats. Fabrics tend to be cottons and linens, with linen being particularly popular, inspired by old French linens. Whites and worn or bleached out pastels are favorite colours. Fabric is often stained with tea to give it the look of old fabric. Bleached and faded are terms often applied to the style.

The essence of shabby chic style is vintage and antique furniture painted white (or another soft pastel color) and distressed at the corners by sanding. Pink, mint green, and soft aqua are also popular colors seen in accessories and fabrics.

Popular decor items are pillows made of vintage barkcloth fabric, vintage linens, chenille bedspreads, vintage chandeliers, and anything with roses on it. It is a soft, relaxed feminine romantic way of decorating that looks comfortable and inviting. Also called Cottage style

The Founder of Shabby Chic is Rachel Ashwell

No page about the Shabby Chic style of decorating would be complete without mentioning the founder, Rachel Ashwell. The following is taken from an article on About.com.

Rachel Ashwell, founder of the popular Shabby Chic ® style, began her decorating quest in the late 80's, searching garage sales and flea markets for furniture with "good bones" and nice lines. Then she took it home and painted it all white. Upholstered pieces were dressed up in loose washable slipcovers, and vintage accessories were collected to complete the look.

She started doing it to furnish a home for her young family, but has since expanded from these humble beginnings into designing her own custom furniture and fabric lines, opening a network of Shabby Chic(r) stores, writing style books, and becoming a TV how-to expert on E network's style channel. She is also a featured designer in Victoria Magazine's book, Designers In Residence .

Pink Roses

My favorite color for roses is the pink rose, which in Victorian days stood for joyfulness.
Pink roses were also said to be a symbol of grace and elegance and were often given as an expression of admiration and appreciation.

Pink roses had a gentler meaning than red roses which, although used for all occasions today, were thought to mean deep feelings for someone special. A bouquet of long stemmed roses say, "I will remember you always," where a single long stem rose can say "I love you" or "Thank you."

Thanks for a great lens - the 'shabby chic' look is perfect for my kitchen. I already have an couple of old rockers in there, stripped and ready for painting. I was going to just varnish them, but doing a 'shabby chic' on them sounds so much better.
