Ink meets timeless beauty: a rose

I'm brand new to the world of body art and just got my first tattoo.   This lens is about Rose tattoos and also about my own story and why I picked this type of tattoo.

Since getting a tattoo is a decision that should not be made lightly, I believe that everyone who gets "inked" has some kind of story or motive behind the design and placement of the tattoo.

This lens is about rose tattoos and my story and choice in choosing a rose design for my first tattoo.

A tattoo is a marking made by inserting indelible ink into the layers of skin to change the pigment for decorative or other reasons. Tattoos on humans are a type of decorative body modification, while tattoos on animals are most commonly used for identification or branding.

Tattooing has been practiced worldwide. The Ainu, the indigenous people of Japan, traditionally wore facial tattoos. Today one can find Berbers of Tamazgha (North Africa), Maori of New Zealand, and Atayal of Taiwan with facial tattoos. Tattooing was widespread among Polynesian peoples and among certain tribal groups in the Taiwan, Philippines, Borneo, Mentawai Islands, Africa, North America, South America, Mesoamerica, Europe, Japan, Cambodia, New Zealand and Micronesia. Despite some taboos surrounding tattooing, the art continues to be popular in many parts of the world.

The "Rose" & St. Therese - What the symbol means to me ...

The picture you see in this module is of a Catholic Saint named Therese. Believe it or not, I spent 7 years in the convent as a nun and grew very close to the spirituality and "spirit" of this great saint and woman. She walked a heroic path and dealt with a lot of peril and suffering.

The symbol of the rose was the pinnacle of Therese's spirituality. One of her most famous quotes is:

"I will let fall from heaven a shower or roses".

The rose was such a strong symbol for her. Beauty and thorns mixed in one entity.

Throughout my journey as a nun and still today, Therese has used the symbolism of "rose" to signify that she is close to me and there to offer a prayer and companionship through some of the toughest times.

I was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis in 2002 and had to retire from the workforce in 2004 due to complications from MS (the disease can be relentless and unforgiving). Somehow, through it all, I have made it through and landed on my feet. Not without some tears of my own. But through it all, I feel the hand of Therese on my shoulder helping to guide me and handing "roses" to me along the way. They symbolism of the "rose" has come to mean "blessing" to me (sometimes in disguise). Every time Therese hands me one -- it is both beauty and pain. The rose amidst thorns.

As I strive to live life day-to-day and keep my health stable amidst new challenges and surgeries, I feel the hand of Therese as friend and mentor.

The decision to get a rose on my left breast (out of site but near the heart) is a forever reminder that Therese is near at hand. It is a reminder of the constant blessings that my life is - beauty among the thorns at times. There are no thorns visible in my tattoo ... but inherently they are there.

My rose is a reminder that my life is a blessing and that I am not alone, no matter what.

You can read more about St. Therese in my Squidoo Lens on her.

Prayer to St. Therese

May today there be peace within.

May you trust God that you are exactly where you are meant to be.

May you not forget the infinite possibilities that are born of faith.

May you use those gifts that you have received, and pass on the love that has been given to you.

May you be content knowing you are a child of God.

Let this presence settle into your bones, and allow your soul the freedom to sing, dance, praise and love. It is there for each and every one of us.

Chick Ink: 40 Stories of Tattoos--And the Women Who Wear Them

About CHICK INK:

Biker chick! Circus freak! White trash! These were the labels that used to be assigned to women with tattoos, but no longer. Today women obtain more than half of all tattoos, a number that has quadrupled since the 1970s and more and more women are getting inked every day. From businesswomen to new moms to mid-lifers, nowadays you never know who is inked beneath their clothes.

From the divorcee looking for a new start to the 20-something looking to express herself, from the mastectomy patient looking for art to cover scars to a woman looking to memorialize a special moment in her life, women get tattoos for many reasons. And each one of those tattoos has a story.

Chick Ink tells the real stories of those women and their body art, those who get tattoos and those who give tattoos. Why did they decide to get a tattoo, what was the tattoo experience like, and how has having that tattoo changed their perceptions of their own body and how others perceive them?

Chick Ink will also include stories from female tattoo artists. Stories about why they went into the tattoo industry, people they have tattooed, and the stereotypes and barriers they have had to face in this male-dominated profession.

Chick Ink gives voice to the thousands of women who got tattooed despite the stereotypes society may place upon them. It showcases the unique personal experience that getting tattoo can be and also the bond it creates between inked women. These candid and funny tales reveal the daring and yet deeply meaningful motivations behind tattoos and how that inked art changes the bearer both internally and externally.
