To use this system, the player must have a bankroll large enough to potentially cover several large bets. Because this is a progressive system, the wagers can become large. Not having enough to cover them will render the system unworkable and will result in the loss of the original bankroll.

The first bet should be small, but the amount is up to you. If that amount is lost, the amount is doubled for the next bet. If the new amount is lost, it is doubled in the next round. Each time a bet is lost, that amount must be doubled in the next round. If there are many losses in a row, it is possible for the necessary bet amount to get extremely high. But, if there is one win at any point then no money has been lost, and there is a small win. The win at the end of a string of losses is the amount of the first bet.

Part of the reason that the Martingale Progression is so popular and venerated is that it does make the assumption of some losses, which most gamblers expect anyway. It also provides a way to keep track of losses and to get back those losses, which is an important part of any gambler's winning strategy. But, there are also several reasons that the Martingale Progression sometimes causes problems.

With this system of progressive bets, it is probable that a few losses can lead to extremely high bets in a short amount of time. This can mean that a player's bankroll comes up short before the player has had a win. If this occurs, the money lost is lost and smaller bets made will not make up for the amounts already lost.

Another problem is with the maximum allowable bets on some roulette tables. Most people using the Martingale Progression begin with a very small bet in the beginning, perhaps one low-value chip, knowing how quickly doubling will raise the stakes. Because of this, the end result after several losses and one win is still just the small, initial bet. The makes the system low paying in the end, discouraging some from using the system at all.

Though many players enjoy using the Martingale Progression, there are many who won't use it for its obvious problems.
