Round Area Rugs

Or more correctly, a round area rug in a symmetrical room, can pose a particularly singular challenge to the aspiring interior designer. Nothing looks quite so out of place as a round rug, sitting in the middle of a square room, try it and see, it just looks strange. So how do you decorate with a round rug, without creating a disharmony?

Possibly the most practical use for a round rug, is to highlight a piece of furniture, it can be used much like a pedestal is used to display a statue. If you are feeling particularly brave, a round rug in a strong color can be used, in conjunction with some area lighting, to create a bright spot in a room, possibly in an area that is used as a home office or as a reading area. By using a brightly colored rug, in conjunction with localized lighting, you can brighten just this small section of the room, even at those times when the rest of the room is being dimly lit.

If you have a large entranceway, then you already have the perfect spot to place a round rug, this will achieve two things. It will add some well needed welcome to the main entrance to your home, and it will make the hallway look larger, by leaving the edges and corners of this are empty. A square of symmetrical rug used in the same place would have the opposite effect, making the space seem much smaller and less welcoming.

With a rectangular rug, it is likely that you chose the rug for a particular room or space, and it is unlikely that moving it to a new location would be as simple.
