The Doubtful World of Roy Spencer

Roy Spencer has recently made a career out of appearing on television to attack the science behind global warming theory. He casts himself as an impartial voice, but the real story of Spencer's work is less clean and clear. His comments on climate change, for example, take place in the context of his work with organizations that have been funded by Exxon-Mobil.

The greatest irony of Roy Spencer is that while he presents himself as a voice of skepticism and doubt, he has actually aligned himself with organizations that promote the opposite of doubt. Working with the Interfaith Stewardship Alliance, Spencer has been part of an effort to advocate environmental policy that's based on a "Biblical view" rather than science. Spencer has also been a defender of the pseudoscience of "Intelligent Design" Creationism, saying that the theory of evolution is really just a kind of religion.

Making science conform with previously-held beliefs isn't something that a true skeptic would do. The more one examines Mr. Spencer's work, the less he appears to be a skeptic, and the more he appears to be a simple ideologue. This lens is dedicated to an examination of Roy Spencer, and his rather partisan political agenda.

A History of Error and Bias

Roy Spencer has a history of mistakes with statistics, and mixing his politics and religion with his science

Roy Spencer gets lots of attention going on TV talk shows telling other people what's wrong with their science, but Spencer himself wouldn't withstand such scrutiny very well.

Spencer's most famous research was into tropospheric temperatures that he claimed proved that global temperatures were cooling, not warming. It turned out that Spencer had made significant mathematical mistakes in his research, however, and when these mistakes were corrected for, Spencer's research showed warming, not cooling. In spite of these developments, global warming deniers still cite the old research as proof that global warming is a hoax.

There are more fundamental problems with Roy Spencer's approach to scientific work, however. His book on climate change science actually begins with a denial that scientific data are relevant to the debate. He demeans the data as "blindingly technical statistics".

If the facts aren't important to Roy Spencer's science, then what is? Religion, it seems, forms the foundation of Spencer's research. He's worked with a group called the Interfaith Stewardship Alliance, which states that climate policy should be based upon the religious prophecies of the Bible. Roy Spencer also argues that biology classes in public high schools should include the Christian Creationist curriculum of Intelligent Design Theology.

Roy Spencer's work with organizations that are funded by fossil-fuel giant Exxon-Mobil show, however, that religion isn't all that motivates his "scientific" work. Plain old money seems to play quite a large role as well.

Most of the science on the left is benefiting tremendously from government funding of alarmist positions. People who call themselves liberals won't listen to anyone who is conservative or Christian. You liberals are the greatest deceivers and liars of all time, yet you accuse others who oppose you of opposing only for the purpose of gain. Open your eyes. This is not political. Conservatives who research this are trying to find out the facts and not jump to erroneous conclusions as you people seem to want to do.

hugh, you may want to google Barry Bickmore or others who are not "liberal" but have been looking at evidence and agree with most scientists who have studied this issue.

The number of charlatans denying the crrent warming cycle is dwindling. We still have Senator Inhofe of Oklahoma who knows even less about the subject than Al gore.

    Check these curves out:

Not very alarming amount of global warming here I should say.
I recommend the site above for those who would like to
get some overview of Dr Spencers research.

Maybe the most interesting issue is the sign of
the feedback from low clouds. In the IPCC-AR4 ch8 the sign of
that feedback is proposed to be positive.
Spencer points out indications that the sign
instead could be negative, which in turn implies the need of some
major revision of the IPCC model "projections" of future temperatures.
