Ranked #598 in Games, #15,096 overall
Want an RRoD Permanent Fix for your XBOX 360? Read on!
It really is a shame that problems with the XBOX 360 have people looking for an RRoD permanent fix. In case you don't know yet, the RRoD (short for Red Ring of Death) is a fatal error in the XBOX 360 caused by a general hardware failure, and renders your console unplayable.
There are many different ideas for fixing it floating around on the internet, but almost all of them only solve the problem temporarily, and end up causing irreversible damage to your system. So, does the RRoD fix actually work? Fortunately, in my search to save my own console, I found a real RRoD permanent fix. Check out the step-by-step instructions below!
RRoD Permanent Fix - What NOT to Do!
So . . . have you heard of the towel trick yet? Good.DON'T TRY IT!
The towel trick is a temporary fix idea that's been making its way around the forums and YouTube. It usually involves taking a soaked towel and fusing it to your XBOX 360's GPU with heat. Now, I'm not an electrician, but aren't water and electronics mortal enemies? But seriously, if you're looking for an RRoD permanent fix, don't try this. It's dangerous, only temporary and could ruin your system for good.
Also, please DO NOT just follow some kid's video tutorial on YouTube. These kids are not professionals and their "fixes" could cause injury and severely damage your console.
RRoD Permanent Fix Step-by-Step Instructions
Step 1 - Disassemble Console Case
Set yourself up at a clean table at a comfortable height. Grab your XBOX 360 and remove the faceplate, being careful to hold the DVD tray down when doing so.The image below is a still from James Dean's XBOX 360 3 Red Light Fix guide. Click on it to see this part in full motion and learn more about the guide.

The removal of the XBOX 360 housing is a little tricky. Below is another still from the RRoD repair guide mentioned above, showing one of the crucial steps to remove the outer housing without any breakage. You need to use a fine-tipped screwdriver to release the side panels via the vented portion. I recommend following the guide while doing this to avoid any damage to your system.

Step 2 - Remove Motherboard and DVD Transport
Remove all screws locking the motherboard in place. Once it is free, gently lift it up and begin unplugging the many component cables attached to it and the DVD transport. At this point you'll have to remove the fan and fan shroud as well. Refer to the XBOX 360 3 Red Light Fix guide for detailed info.
Step 3 - Remove X-clamps from Motherboard
Now we're getting into the meat of the RRoD permanent fix here. Once the motherboard is free, you'll need to flip it over and remove the screws holding the X-clamps in place. Next, you'll use a small flathead screwdriver to gently pry the X-clamps up and off. Make sure these are set in a safe place if you don't plan on replacing them with stronger ones. However, replacing the X-clamps is HIGHLY recommended to fix RRoD permanently. The XBOX 360 3 Red Light Fix guide has tons of information on this.
Step 4 - Wipe Away Old Thermal Paste
Now it's time to remove the old thermal paste from your console's processors. Thermal paste breakdown is one of the major causes of the Red Ring of Death, so this step is super important. First, remove the heat sink to get access to the CPU and GPU. Then use a lint-free cloth to wipe away the old paste. The XBOX 360 3 Red Light Fix guide recommends using ArctiClean to completely remove the old paste and prepare the surface for the next step. Grab the guide to learn the finer points on how to do this without damaging adjacent components.
Step 5 - Apply Fresh Thermal Paste
Once the old paste is removed, it's time to add a layer of fresh thermal paste. Now, this is not an exact science, but there is such a thing as too much thermal paste. Apply a layer a few millimeters thick and let it sit for around 15 minutes. Check out the XBOX 360 3 Red Light Fix guide for more detailed information on applying the thermal paste.
Step 6 - Test Your RRoD Permanent Fix!
OK, you're almost there. It's time to put everything back together. Make sure the heatsink is securely in place, and then reconstruct your console in the reverse order that you disassembled it. If you're replacing the X-clamps, this is the time to do that.Once everything is back together, plug in your console and press the power button. If your console flashes all green lights, congratulations: you've just performed an RRoD Permanent Fix!

Basically, that's it! I know, I know: it doesn't sound that easy. That's why you should always be following a good XBOX 360 repair guide to help you through the process. Below are all the details about the one I used.
