Ruby, Ruby, Ruby

The ruby color, mineral composition, treatment and where they are mined

Which color would you automatically associate with love, passion and power? Of course it's Red. Red is the color of love. It radiates warmth and strength. And red is also the color of the ruby, called the king of gemstones. Rubies are light pink to blood red in color. The brightest and best red in ruby colors is called Pigeon Blood Red. The red of the ruby is unequaled in warmth and fire. Ruby red is not just any old color, it is a sensual, passionate, powerful color. The ruby is the perfect way to express powerful feelings. Jewelry with a precious rubies attests to that passionate, intense love that people can feel for each other.

Rubies are the red members of the corundum family of minerals. Corundum of any other color--blue, pink, yellow, and many others--is called sapphire. The ruby has everything a precious stone should have: magnificent color, excellent hardness and outstanding brilliance. Also, it is an extremely rare gemstone, especially the finer quality rubies.
The ruby is considered one of the four precious stones: Ruby, Sapphire, Emerald and Diamond. In the wonderful world of gemstones, the ruby is the undisputed leader. For thousands of years, the ruby has been considered one of the most valuable gemstones on Earth.

Rubies have a hardness of 9.0 on the Mohs scale of mineral hardness and only the diamond is harder. All natural rubies have imperfections in them, including color impurities and inclusions of rutile needles known as "silk". Gemologists use these needle inclusions found in natural rubies to distinguish them from synthetics, simulants, or substitutes.
Almost all rubies today are treated in some form, improving the quality of gemstones by treating them is common practice. Some treatments are used in almost all cases and are therefore considered "acceptable" practices. The most common treatment is using heat.

Rubies are mined in Myanmar (Burma), Thailand, Sri Lanka, Tanzania, Kenya, Madagascar, and Cambodia, but they have also been found in the U.S. states of Montana, North Carolina and South Carolina.

True pigeon's-blood red is extremely rare, more a color of the mind than the material world. One Burmese trader expressed it best when he said:
"asking to see the pigeon's blood is like asking to see the face of God."

Burma's Mogok: Valley of Rubies

Legend of the First Ruby Found on Earth

Long before the Buddha walked the earth, the northern part of Burma was said to be inhabited only by wild animals and birds of prey.
One day the biggest and oldest eagle in creation flew over a valley. On a hillside shone an enormous morsel of fresh meat, bright red in color. The eagle attempted to pick it up, but its claws could not penetrate the blood-red substance. Try as he may, he could not grasp it. After many attempts, at last he understood. It was not a piece of meat, but a sacred and peerless stone, made from the fire and blood of the earth itself. The stone was the first ruby on earth and the valley was Mogok.

Storing Your Baubles The Right Way

To keep your jewelry in the best shape it is a good idea to store it properly. Soft and porous gemstones such as pearls and opals are easily scratched. Even hard gems can scratch other hard gems and gold, silver and even platinum.

Store jewelry in sturdy cases with soft, lined interiors to avoid impact against hard surfaces and scratching.

Place jewelry in soft fabric pouches if no jewelry cases are available.

Store jewelry separately to avoid tangles and scratches.

Use tarnish-resistant cloth and cases to store silver.

Keep your jewelry boxes away from high heat and excessive moisture, which can damage some stones.

Pearls should be stored in jewelry bags, never plastic, the jewelry bag can be hung, but don't hand pearl necklaces as it may cause streching of the cord
