Some information about the Oriental carpets of India

It is amazing that these beautiful, yet functional, works of art are still woven today using the same materials, techniques and designs as centuries ago.

Carpets of wool were known in India as early as 500 B.C. References to woven mats and floor coverings can be found in ancient and medieval Indian literature. But pile carpets, which are the most famous of Indian rugs, came to India in the reign of Akbar in 16th century.

The art grew and flourished after Persian carpet weavers were brought to India around the year 1550-1600. The Persian carpets became Indianized. It spread to the whole subcontinent with each area having its own specialties.

The Indian carpets are considered the most technically accomplished classical carpets. The carpet weavers over time have grown artistically and produce some of the finest carpets on the market today.

Indian Carpets are renowned for their exquisite designs, elegance, attractive colors, and workmanship. The better grade of Indian rugs made from imported fine wool (New Zealand) tend to a great value.

India today has become one of the leading centers of Oriental rug production. More rugs are imported by the US from India than from any other country. Since most rug designs originated from other countries and most all carpet designs are produced there, you should be careful to not rely on the name of the rug to identlfy it's place of origin.

Some popular rug types from India are:

Dhurrie
Indo Bijar
Indo Chobi
Indo Gabbeh
Indo Heriz
Indo Kashan
