Rum

Ranked #25,749 in Food & Cooking, #562,868 overall

Is Rum the perfect booze? I think so. Most people don't realize the varieties of rum that are available in the world.

I will try to link to some of my favorite rum related sites and maybe explain why I think Rum and Coke should be banned.

Rum brands and reviews

Bacardi
Found all over the world it can be a safe bet if you are faced with strange European brands like Strohs. I recommend Bacardi 8 (Ocho) on rocks or straight.

Appleton Estate Rum
These classic rums are now available many places in the world and offer a much better alternative to the everpresent Bacardi range. Aged Jamaican rums are in many ways similar to good Scotch. With the exception of X/V which is good for mixing almost all the others are best straight or on the rocks.
Wray & Nephew
When Jamaican's say rum they mean Wray & Nephew. It is a fresh overproof white rum with I think %65 alcohol. It is becoming more and more popular in London, where you can now find it in many good bars. My favorite way of drinking it is on ice with a dash of Rose's lime cordial mixed in.
Ron Abuelo
My favorite aged rum in Panama. It is very cheap in Panama at less than $5 a bottle and at least the equal to Bacardi 8 and Havana Club 7, which are both 3 times as much. Drink it straight or on the rocks.
Ministry of Rum
The title says it all this site has been around for a while and you might be lucky to stumble over the book in tourist shops in the Caribbean.
Captain Morgan
This fellow lens has info about Captain Morgan. To be honest I don't think I've tried it in 5 years. I remember it being not horrible, but not exceptional either. The good thing about Captain Morgan is that it is available in most parts of the world. I must admit I'm a bit worried about the recipe for Rum and Coke. The only that is remotely palatable in my opinion is if there is more lime than coke.
Cruzan Rum
Cruzan rum is a great rum distillery on St. Croix in the US Virgin Islands. As a Dane this rum holds a special place for me as it used to be made especially for the Danish market. My grandpa always used to tell me with awe how his Dad had served shots of this for him on cold winter days.

Cruzan is still a great rum. The cheaper varieties both white and golden are perfect mixers. The older ones are great for sipping, although I haven't tried all of them yet.
Seco Herrerano
This cane spirit from Panama is one of the most popular spirits in Panama. It is made from raw cane juice, just like Cachaca and French style Rhum Agricole, giving it a very fresh taste.

In modern Panama people tend to mix it with juices, sodas and the like, but in the interior of the country many people like it mixed with condensed milk. Me? I discovered that it works perfectly on rocks with a splash of Rose's lime cordial or with tonic.
Ron Cañita Alambique
On my recent trip to Puerto Rico I bought this bottle. Fantastic white rum with a fresh cane flavor. It has a great natural slightly golden color, similar to Carta Vieja from Panama.

Classic rum coctails

Ti Punch
French Creole recipe for one of the most classic rum drinks Ti Punch (pronounced Tee Po-nsh). For those like me who don't know French. You basically need 4 parts strong Guadeloupe or Martinique white rum (55%), 1 part cane syrup and half a fresh lime.

Drink it as is or mix it with ice and let the locals laugh at you for being a girl.
Piña Colada
I hated Piña Colada until I tried the original in San Juan, Puerto Rico it's birthplace. The real one as seen in the recipe behind this link is a world a part from the junk they serve in just about every bar outside PR. It is rich, strong and absolutely not just for girls. In Panama I used to make it with Ron Cortez, Pineapple juice concentrate and fresh frozen coconut milk. Here in Denmark I have ended up using Bacardi. Personally I like it with a golden rum.
Cuba Libre or La Mentirita - The real rum and coke
Known in Cuba as La Mentirita as Cuba really can not be called libre. I am normally not in favor of this drink, but in it's original form it can actually be refreshing. The difference you ask? Half a lime squeezed into the drink makes all the difference. Please guys if you want to one day enjoy a real Cuba Libre, please do not buy it made out of Havanna Club or other Cuban rums.
