Start Walking Then Running

Why Would a Walking Enthusiast Want to Run?

OK here it is-the real reason for me considering...running. I love walking-it's good for me in so many ways I almost get tired just talking about it. I started it for fitness and weight loss. I wanted more 'condition'. The ability to do as much as I want to do and the benefits of toned muscles, a spark in my eye and a choice of clothing I enjoy wearing. Walking has it all! Except as someone who has been walking to lose weight for some years it is a process of change. This is why after many years of writing in my blog that walking is the better option I am considering the value of adding jogging into my exercise repertoire. The net result of successful weight loss is that it's likely you will need to consider changing your exercises or diet to continue that weight loss. The fact you have been successful is the cause of the need to make these changes.

Everyday People Who Run for Fun

Yes This Is About Playing, Walking or Running to Lose Weight!

Playing=Walking to Lose WeightThis is not for people who love to run! This is for those of us who gave up on running as 'not me' or 'too hard' a long time ago. Yet the funny thing is that after walking regularly for exercise for some time I now realize I'm fitter than I've ever been. Maybe not running fit yet. Just not as far away as I once was. Running or jogging for fun is an option. It adds a fun variety to my normal activity. Gives a sense of achievement and incremental improvement. One of the great changes with the move to online fitness advice and motivation is the ease of tailoring your lifestyle to suit and also to prepare for changes smoothly with minimal disruption or injury.

The point of these changes is to involve yourself in living life in such a way that it supports you totally and in so many ways. Find out what is needed and add these into your life. Running metaphors abound-'don't fall at the first hurdle' for instance. Things happen-say an injury that restricts your movement and exercise. Find some guidance via Google. One golden rule is that when starting a weight loss exercise program you must start from where you are, that is, your level of fitness, experience in training and general preparedness.

I have done some jogging on the Wii and quite enjoy the little runs around the island with the Wii trainer waving at me from in front. I still haven't decided if his/her waving means 'hey you're still there' or 'get a move on or you'll be left behind.'

Just below here I've put some videos that give heaps of good advice for starting running when you have only ever been a walker before. If you are not even at the walking stage than running is not for you yet. Look at walking to lose weight first.

Weight Loss Visualization

20 Minute Meditation

I have always loved the meditative aspect of walking. It is time to appreciate, create, visualize and generally de-stress! Running also brings you into the 'zone' in a different way and is equally valuable. This video by Tonya Tko is a great way to become clear at the start as to what you are trying to achieve. Take it lightly-and let the general idea infuse your mind and body. There are small errors but these don't matter. Don't move to drinking 8 glasses of water a day unless you already drink near to that. Like any big change it is best to start from where you are. Water requirements as with other things is very much individual.

Lessen Injuries by Running the Right Way

I remember hearing Hugh Grant say that his director in a movie laughed and asked him to stop joking around when he saw him run. Apparently he ran like a girl!

Some good tips here for those of us who haven't given much thought to running posture and style.

Losing a Pound

The calorie equation (calories consumed vs calories expended) is the easiest way to understand weight loss. That is, weight is lost when more calories are used up through exertion and body maintenance than are taken in through food and liquids during the studied period. Use 3500 calories more than you consume and you just lost a pound.

Generally (as gender, height and weight, age, speed and level of fitness affect the results) walking takes longer to burn the same number of calories as running.

It may even be up to twice as long!

Shake Up Your Playlist

Number 1 Tip for Overcoming Boredom

i admit that my fave audio input has been inspirational and work related podcasts. In the gym though I do like workout music and it appears to me that music would be better for running. Whether on the track or treadmill the mind requires some sort of rhythmic or diverting input from the stress!

Add to my tentative starter list below, puh...lease! I would love to have good running songs to amp up my energy levels for work and play.
