I think playing with dolls of different cultures might stimulate interest in learning about those countries. When I was in grade school, our school had a display every year, everyone was invited to bring in a doll they might have in a costume from a different country. The display was always fascinating, and seeing the beautiful traditional costumes from the different countries created an interest in the history of those countries for me.

I don't think playing alone will help them to learn about a specific culture. I think doll in a pretty costume (and they are gorgeous) is just a doll in a pretty costume. Parents need to provide some knowledge to go along with it.
