Making the Best Use of Your RV Refrigerator

The refrigerators in recreational vehicles (motorhomes, trailers, etc.) are usually pretty small. Here is some advice to make the most of that limited space in the RV fridge and to avoid food problems on the trip. (refrigerator photo by Virginia Allain)

Life in the campground became a lot easier when recreational vehicles (RVs) started having refrigerators. Fixing a meal while on the road in a motorhome or camper or while in camp is a lot simpler than it used to be without a refrigerator.

I'll share with you my tips for stocking that RV refrigerator so the food doesn't shift, spill or break as you roll down the road.

In addition there are some troubleshooting tips that might come in handy. Nothing spoils a trip faster than the RV fridge breaking down and all your food getting ruined.

Cool the RV Refrigerator before Filling It up

Cool Tip #1

Start cooling the refrigerator down ahead of departure time according to the guidelines in your owner's manual. It takes a couple of hours for it to chill properly, so don't put the food in immediately or some of it might spoil.

It's important for the RV to be level while the refrigerator is cooling. If your driveway slopes, use levelers under the RV.

Put the Food into Smaller Containers for the RV Refrigerator

Cool Tip #2

Put only what will be used on the trip into the RV refrigerator. Don't take oversized jars of condiments. Put just enough mayonnaise, ketchup, and mustard into smaller containers.
If you are taking packaged foods, removing the outer box and just packing the inner bag saves space. Be sure to cut out and bring along the cooking instructions from the box.

Traveling in the RV with Bananas and Other Fruit

Cool Tip #3

Don't put soft fruits like bananas into the refrigerator. The bouncing around they will get as the RV travels down the road reduces them to mush. Put easily bruised fruit like a container of fresh strawberries on a folded washcloth for cushioning if it must be refrigerated. Something like bananas are better off riding on the bed.

Avoid Glass Bottles in the RV Refrigerator

Cool Tip #4

Transfer liquids like milk or wine into plastic carafes with tightly fitting lids. Too many glass bottles in the fridge could result in breakage if the roads are rough.

Keeping the Food from Shifting in the RV Refrigerator

Cool Tip #5

Pack the food closely together in the RV refrigerator so there's no room for the items to move around during travel. Remember after lunch to rearrange the food to fill any gaps from food that was eaten.

If items are stacked, be careful opening the refrigerator door as the contents often shift during the trip. You can get tension bars to hold the foods in place inside the refrigerator.

Keeping the RV Refrigerator from Getting Moldy

Cool Tip #6

Remove all the food from the RV refrigerator at the end of the trip. Turn it off. Wipe down the inside with a spray cleaner and a rag or paper towels to remove any food residues. Remove any ice from the freezer compartment and dry that area.

Crumple sheets of newpaper into balls and put these in the different sections of the refrigerator and freezer. Place something in the door to keep it slightly open so air can get into the refrigerator. This video demonstrates this technique for keeping away mold while an RV is stored or parked.
