RV Boondocking Basics: A Guide to Living Without Hookups

Every year more people learn the secrets of successful boondocking--RV living without utility hookups. While fellow RVers are shelling out cash to stay at RV parks, boondockers stay at low cost (or free) natural campsites.

Do they give up the "good things" of park living? Not at all. They watch TV, take showers, run computers, stereos & microwave ovens.

With renewable solar or wind power they don't need noisy generators. RV Boondocking Basics will help you

Understand RV electrical systems & batteries
Evaluate, size, & purchase solar and wind charging systems
Stay warm while using less electricity
Live comfortably while consuming less

All this & more presented concisely and with a touch of humor from the open road. Charts, diagrams, & worksheets make this a most valuable RV bookshelf resource. The authors are experienced RVers who know & live the RV lifestyle. Their writings appear frequently in popular RV magazines.

RV Boondocking Basics: A Guide to Living Without Hookups

Where was this info when we started boondocking?
We're in our second decade of boondocking/dry camping. This book would have been such a great help when we were planning our RV life style.

It's basic enough that if you are serious about making this you way of like you can put a pencil to all the applications covered in the book and use them when you start building that perfect boondocking RV.

The theory and explanations are elementary enough for someone setting in an office dreaming of getting out on the road during vacation or after retirement can visualize and analyze what has to be done. Then they can take this book home and they can use it like a guide to get started on a new life style only we know.

The freedom of living off the grid is something no one can really explain.

Buy and read the book and I'm sure you will not travel with out it. -- Loyal A. Mccammond

RV Repair and Maintenance Manual: Updated and Expanded

RV Repair and Maintenance Manual is the most popular resource for owners who prefer to work on their own RVs.

The book features step-by-step procedures for maintaining and repairing RVs, presented in easy-to-understand layman's terms and simple-to-follow instructions. The fourth edition has been updated and expanded to keep up with the latest in RV technology and repair procedures.

From trouble-shooting guidelines to quick diagnoses and repairs, this manual will keep you rolling down the highway and not in the repair shop. Packed with valuable information, checklists, photos, and charts, the RV Repair and Maintenance Manual includes topics on electrical systems, LP-gas systems, water systems, sanitation systems, AC generators, heating systems, air-conditioning systems, refrigerators, trailer brakes, trailer suspensions, dinghy towing, hitches, drivetrain systems, solar power systems, ovens and ranges, microwaves and ice makers, exterior and interior care, and accessories.

RV Repair and Maintenance Manual: Updated and Expanded

OK - I haven't read this book front to back. It is, after all, a reference book. However, I have skimmed each of the sections and read several in detail, particularly those dealing with 12 Vdc and plumbing. I didn't pay so much attention to those parts dealing with motorhomes because I don't have one.

However, whether you own a Class A motorhome or an humble single-axle travel trailer (like I have), this book is *THE* guide to maintenance and repair. Example: I have an n-th hand 1975 Vanguard T13 travel trailer. The electrical system is in horrible shape, to express it charitably. This book has been my constant companion and guide as I refurbished and repaired the wiring, charging system, distribution boxes and so forth. Without doubt it has paid for itself twice or even three times over.

The book is broken down into self-contained sections - so you don't have to read the electrical section if the topic of the day is plumbing. Each section provides definitions for any special terms used, discusses the requirements and nature of the system in general terms, then gets into more detail. Each section has lots of clear line illustrations and high-quality black and white photographs.

The only reason I give this book only 4 stars is that in some respects it is a little intimidating for a novice RV owner. Once you get into it, it is very clear, but the initial impression is a little overwhelming, simply by the sheer size of the book and the volume of information presented. The only way to address this would be to produce multiple books - which might not be such a bad idea. -- Jacky Tar "Ready Aye Ready" (Victoria, BC, Canada)

Don't Leave Home Without It!!
It is rare to find a "how-to" book which addresses both the needs of the mechanically skilled and the needs of those of us who break into a cold sweat at even the sight of a toolbox. This is such a book.

The topics covered, and the depth of the information, provide substance for even the most impassioned "do-it-yourselfer". On the other hand, those of us who are mechanically challenged find the step-by-step instructions and the detailed illustrations and photographs to be invaluable when circumstances require that we actually attempt to fix something.

The "RV Repair and Maintenance Manual", in each of its various editions, has accompanied us on our RV outings since we first got involved in the life style. We can't imagine hitting the road without it! - Dave & Kay Corby "Food & Travel Writers" (Colorado)

RV - A short description:

Australian English: The term "recreational vehicle" may refer to a sport utility vehicle (SUV or 4x4).

British English: The term "recreational vehicle" is little used. Terms covering some of the vehicles classified as "recreational vehicle" in North America are camper van and caravan. The term motorhome (see below) is also used.

French language: The French-made English term "camping-car" is used, and term has also spread to Japan.

German language: A "recreational vehicle" is called "Wohnmobil". wohnen means 'live' or 'reside'.

Spanish language: A "recreational vehicle" is called "autocaravana".

The word "caravaning" is also (but rarely) used to mean "traveling together as a group" in British English, leading to a different meaning.

In North America the term recreational vehicle and its acronym, RV, are generally used to refer to a vehicle equipped with living space and amenities found in a home; they are sometimes called motorhomes. A recreational vehicle normally includes a kitchen, a bathroom, a bedroom and a living room. In other countries the term camper van is more common, and the vehicles themselves vary, typically being smaller than in North America.

RVs are intended for everything from brief leisure activities such as vacations and camping, to full-time living, for which they are often parked in special trailer parks. (However, many trailer parks are reserved just for mobile homes, not to be confused with RVs and motorhomes.) RVs can also be rented in most major cities and tourist areas.

Furthermore, they are occasionally used as mobile offices for business travelers and often include customizations such as extra desk space, an upgraded electrical system, a generator, and satellite Internet.

Complete Guide to Full-Time RVing: Life on the Open Road

Very good introduction to all aspects of RVing full-time

I have several books on RVing full-time, as I plan to do in the next 2-3 months. This book provides an excellent overview of what it is like, what aspects of RVing are unique to full-timers, and just enough personal anecdotes to be very entertaining and useful.

I would highly recommend this book if you are not very familiar with RVing and only intend to purchase and read a few books.

Please keep in mind that the authors, although they cover all types of RVing, have a definate slant towards 5th wheels. If you are definately not planning to have a 5th wheel, you should at least explore alternatives. But even then, it may be worth purchasing. Happy travels!

Complete Guide to Full-Time RVing: Life on the Open Road

This is an older book on RV living and as such it doesn't have much if anything in the way of solar for power, satellite dish for TV and computer use or other off the grid living information one needs in 2007+. But the information on mail, medical, fees for various things, and what type of floor plan for an RV vs a trailer are helpful. - Beth Hartford-DeRoos "MotherLodeBeth" (Sierras of California)
