The Ryder Cup 2008

The Golfing World is about to settle down for a fest of Golf - The Ryder Cup is about to begin and as ever, we are all on the edge of our seats. By the end of Sunday 21 Sept 2008 we will have overdosed on golf and emotion as we follow the ups and downs of the match. The lucky ones will actually be at Valhalla and will be able to watch the twists and turns as they unfold, the rest of us will follow along on TV. There will be much pondering and pontificating about who should play with whom, and what the strategies will be.

Everything will stop in our house as we settle down to watch the matches, the whole weekend will planned like clockwork so we don't miss a moment - and just in case the hard drive dvd will be fired up and running so we can review and debate shots, strategies - even the fashions.

What's your opinion of how the match will develop? Who do you think will win? Do you even care?

RichardMillington, at 1pm on September 23, 2008 predicts:

I'm shocked that USA took it.

RichardMillington, at 12pm on September 17, 2008 predicts:

I think Europe will probably win too. Namely because the USA don't take the competition as seriously as they used to.

Winebuff, at 10am on September 17, 2008 predicts:

Europe will win - I am looking forward to going to Celtic Manor in Cardiff, Wales(only 75 miles away down the M4) and watch us defend our title again in 2010.

flaminglacer, at 8am on September 17, 2008 predicts:

Europe will win the Ryder Cup - why? A balanced team which is confident and on good form. They key word in that sentence is team, maybe it will be different for the American Team this year but in the past it has always been a collection of individuals playing together. Personalities have dominated, and the team has suffered for that. Even with Tiger Woods noble efforts to create more of a team spirit two years ago, somehow it didn't quite gel.

The absence of Woods has allowed more people to shine on the American Tour this year but there is still a huge amount of Ego involved, and I suspect that will get in the way of the team effort that is required.

History Of The Ryder Cup

The Ryder Cup is a golf trophy, donated by Samuel Ryder, which is awarded biennially in an event called the "Ryder Cup Matches" between teams from Europe and the United States. The competition is jointly administered by the PGA of America and the PGA European Tour, and is contested every two years, the venue alternating between courses in the United States and Europe.

The competition began following an exhibition match in 1926 between a team comprising American professionals against a similar one drawn from the British PGA on the East Course, Wentworth Club, Virginia Water, Surrey, UK. The first competition took place in 1927.

Early matches between the two sides were fairly even, but after the Second World War, repeated US dominanceBritain won only once from 1947-77, and matches were frequently very one-sided. led to a decision to extend the representation of the British & IrishThe first golfer from Ireland to play on the Ryder Cup team was Harry Bradshaw in 1953. Fred Daly from Northern Ireland first played in 1947. team to include continental Europe in 1979. This change was partly prompted by the success of a new generation of Spanish golfers of the time, including Seve Ballesteros. He and Antonio Garrido became the first Spaniards to play in the event in 1979. Since then, Team Europe has included players from Denmark, France, Germany, Italy, and Sweden.

Following this change the event has enjoyed more competitive matches, with Europe winning seven times and retaining the Cup once, with seven American wins over this period.

Aww, sorry guys! I didn't have time to watch that much of it this year, but what I did see was some fabulous golf from both teams. Talk about high spirits! Wow! Looked like all the players were really "into it!"

    Peace --- Ron Rink
